alex's most Excellent adventures!
Xian Ciai (hello),
Arrived in Ho Chi Minh City / Saigon for what would be our last stop in Vietnam. While here we stayed in the area of Bien Vien, which was busy, bright and buzzing with activity i.e. a true backpackers ghetto! The street was full of bars, restaurants, net cafes, tour operators etc and ofcourse it wouldnt have been a true backpacker street without the numerous locals trying to sell and promise you everything under sun (and for double its real worth/price at that)!
To find woodsy and i on a typical night out in Saigon, you would have to venture down the main back packer street and to the small but busy drinking stalls. Here we would sit watchinhg the world go by, eating cheap vietnamese food and drinking beer Hoi (a very cheap but weak beer)! At 7000 dong for 2 Litres (17 pence a Litre) its what many of the locals drink and where we found we would meet the most interesting and random people you could wish to meet!
While in saigon we went to visit/crawl the extremly small Cu Chi tunnels (remaining tunnels built and used by the Viet Cong to protect themselves from the US in the war). It was here we also got the opportunity to fire the awesome russian AK-47! Having never fired such a gun before, the sound and power of it was unbelivable!
Other trips included a city tour and a two day one night trip on the mekong delta! Here the two days revolved around boarding various boats and exploring the delta, visting the floating fishing villages and markets etc!
Spent six brilliant days here and met lots of cool folk, (hello to luke and christi from aus) and it was a good way to sign off our stay in Vietnam! I will miss saigon (no pun intended) but Vietnam even more so! Vietnam has been so much more than i could have imagined or expected. Its definatly my favourite country so far and i hope one day i can return to visit this beautiful country with its amazing people!
Right next stop is Cambodia and the capital Phnom Penh! Woodsy has just told me that he once saw a TV prog stating it was considered the second most dangerous city to visit! Sound like a challenge, will let you know whats craic when we arrive!
