We travelled down from Melbourne to The Great Ocean Road a trip we had both been looking forward to and we were not disappointed. We first stopped in Aireys Inlet and walked on the beach and visited the lighthouse. The water is a bit colder down here and all the kids were swimming in Wet suits, we just had a little dip. The views were beautiful as we were walking back to our campsite we were wondering which lighthouse in Oz was used for "Round the Twist" only to read a few days later that the lighthouse in Airey's Inlet was in fact thee lighthouse they used. We then headed along the coast passing through Lorne, and stopping at Apollo Bay which was a gorgeous little town right on the coast, just driving along you were treated to beautiful views. We drove up through Otway national park to The Treetop walk which is a boarded walk that reaches 47m high so you can walk alongside the high trees. We stayed in the park overnight which is free by Johanna Beach, although you couldn't swim here as it was too dangerous, the waves were so powerful and big. The next day we went to Melba Gully also in The Otway national park, The Johanna river runs through here although it wasn't much of a river because of the drought. We saw the 'Old Tree' which is about 300 years old. At night you can see glow worms here. We then headed for the Twelve Apostles (although now there are only 7), the number 1 thing to do on the ocean rd. Big stacks of rock, out from the land, which were once part of the land but have been eroded away by the huge waves that lap at the bottom of the rock. They were really impressive. We also went to see Loch Ard Gorge and 'London Bridge' further on from the twelve apostles I've put photos up of them. I have seen lots of photos of them but it's just as good in real view. From here we drove onto Port Campell which is really small with just one main street, we stayed in a campsite right by the river, it was such a lovely little place as all the towns are off the Great Ocean road. We went to Tower Hill which is the site of an extinct volcano which is now covered by trees home to a variety of wildlife and two lakes. We were hoping to see koalas and we weren't disappointed we found 6 in the trees looking cute a cuddly just like a big ball of grey fluff. When we went in the visitor centre, the guide had found a baby kangaroo out in the area alone and he had brought it in to look after as he said the Kangaroo would not survive the winter alone. We visited Portland and went to see the 'Petrified forest' I can't quite remember exactly how (!) but the forest has turned hard like rock and you can just make out the individual trees in the sand coloured stone. We then went on a boat trip to a seal colony, we went on a speed boat out too it, which was great speeding across the waves. We took loads of snaps of the seals, they all looked so cute, and there was 1 baby seal. The guide said he had seen a Great White Shark two days earlier. Chris was hoping to see a Great White but I was hoping not to. Since the great Ocean road we have been to the national park in Nelson we stayed there for a night you have to get a permit to stay in the park but it's worth it to be so close to all the nature. We saw kangaroos jumping around and beautiful birds. You can hire canoes along the river. We really enjoyed the Great Ocean Road it is worth it for all the views and the national parks. We have had a nice relaxing time and have enjoyed all the different sights. The van is going well, I've even had a go of driving it and it's great.
