We stayed in Melbourne for 3 days. We didn't exactly arrive at the best time though, that being Good Friday, as everything was shut, so we ended up just strolling around the city having a look. We loved Melbourne, it has lots more old buildings like Flinders street station which is a huge old building right next to Federation Square which is the most modern. It has a multicultural population, more so than any other Australian city we have come across so far, there is a really big Chinese population. When the shops and museums and everything finally re-opened we went to the Old Melbourne Gaol which was really interesting. You get to go in all the old cells and read the stories of the convicts who were imprisoned there. There was a women's floor on the top. Ned Kelly was hanged here, and his mother was also spent time in this jail. We then headed over to the MCG or 'The G' as the locals call it. It is a 90,000 seat stadium and we had to go see an Aussie Rules football match there which is like Gaelic football (but we didn't really know the rules so we figured it out as we went along). We decided to support Melbourne but half way through we thought we should have supported Sydney as Melbourne (Richmond) weren't doing too well, we really got into it in the end. It's a strange mix of football and rugby and I don't know what else, but it's an exciting game. We also went to the Victoria Market which is a huge market that sells everything, from clothes to Ugg boots to fresh meat, fish and fruit. We bought some nice fresh food from there. We took a short trip to St Kilda to see some friends. It has a lovely little beach and Luna park which has a few rides. We sat on the beach and enjoyed the scenery.I went to visit a family friend-Carol north of Melbourne and we had a great day out visiting Hanging Rock, old volcanic rock which was great for climbing over and getting lost, and it had great views of the long flat land the stretches on forever. We went up to Mt Macedon too. It was nice to be a bit more in the country, as we have seen a lot of the cities so far.
