We have had a great time in South Australia. We went to Adelaide for the day and looked around the city. It's a lot smaller when you compare it to the others but it had some good museums. We went to the art gallery and saw some of Australia's famous paintings. The Immigration museum was the best though. They had some excellent pictures illustrating the effect colonialisation had on the Aboriginal community. They also had pictures and stories of the migration of the Finnish people, which gave descriptions of their life before and after. They went through all the old paper advertisements which aimed to get people from the UK to move over to Oz back in the day, and revealed what life was like for many of those when they first arrived on the boats. Adelaide was the first settlement which didn't have convicts brought over. We then went to see the Barossa Valley, the wine region of South Australia. We first went to Hanhdorf, one of the first German settlements back in the 1800s. It was unashamedly touristy but it was great, like an old German town. They had old German bakeries and butchers and pubs. We went to see the German migration museum in the academy. Many left Germany in the 1800s due to the threat of war, lack of jobs and for the freedom of religion. Many were Lutheran and were facing problems practising this religion at home. ?It was very interesting little town. The Barossa Valley was the best though and we had a great time there. We stayed in Tanunda, and just couldn't wait to get on a wine tour. We hired bikes and rode round the valley. We went to the Barossa Farmers market and picked up some fresh food. Then we went on a winery tour at Richmond Grove vineyard (which was free). We got to look around and see how the wine was made and then the best bit, we got to try them. We could try the 6 white wines and all the 6 red if we wanted but that was a bit too much so early in the day. We bought the famous vintage Riesling, and I savoured every mouthful. It was nice to be able to try all the different wines and learn the differences between them? and the processes to make them. We spent the day riding to a few other wineries and we were exhausted by the end of the day, lucky we had a few bottles of wine to chill out with. It's a really pretty place, surrounded by vineyards. It is also the home of Jacobs Creek, we saw their vineyards, and we saw the real Jacobs CREEK. Jacobs Creek actually runs past the Vineyards and we got photos of it so I'll put them up, so that answers the question of where they got the name from. Although it wasn't much of a creek due to the major drought here at the moment.
