We left the coast and started to climb - our destination the thermal springs and ski resort of Hanmer Springs. The journey of about two hours was again through amazing countryside both mountainous and flat and temperatures had increased to a very nice 27 degrees. Some of the mountain sides were blanketed with yellow broom which is an introduced species and becoming a big problem in some areas. On the flat it was apparent that they had been suffering from a lack of rainfall and large water sprinklers 100 metres across were being used to water grassland. The forest fire danger signs were showing high for today - we had only seen it low in other areas. We crossed a fantastic single track bridge across the River Waiau. Finally we arrived at Hanmer Springs and parked. It was then a short walk with our swimmers to the Thermal Pools and Spa where we were able to rest and relax for a couple of hours. There were pools for everyone. There was a swimming club in training plus lane swimming. There was a lazy river and a children's playground in shallow water and or course 4 different Shute/slide options. Fortunately it was very quiet and our interest was in the thermal pools all heated naturally - their were at least 8 different pools at temperatures between 35 and 44 degrees - heavenly. These included pools/ jacuzzis with various massage jets etc and also the more natural mineral pools which included 3 hot sulphur pools. All in all another amazing day!
