Lima - Day 67 - 05/12/2012 (Wednesday)
The bus ride to Lima was uneventful and we arrived about 5. We got on the bus to the hotel and then had some time to relax before heading out for our final night with the group.
The place we were going was a few miles away so instead of getting taxis Martin wanted us to experience local buses. They just fly along the road, you wave them down and they drive off before you even close the door. It was rather crazy. Plus the bus was full when we got on so with 16 tourists piling on a tiny mini bus it was over flowing and the guy collecting the money was hanging out the door for parts of the journey. It was all over within 10 minutes and we found our restaurant in the square as it was the only one with a massive long table. We all ordered and Martin said his good byes to us. It was all rather sloppy but emotional too. As dinner went on one of the Aussie girls started to come across as really drunk, a few minutes later she was lying on the floor of the men's bathroom vomiting. Poor Alice had to go stay with her as her friend she was travelling with didn't want anything to do with her. This went on for almost an hour so was rather unfair. The nail in the coffin was when we were paying and we didn't have her money and her friend wouldn't pay her share and snapped at us for asking. We put her in a taxi and forgot about it. The night got fun after that and we went to a bar and then to a club. Everyone was in high sprits and good form. We all had a really good night. For some reason everything in Lima shuts early (2am) so were back in the hotel before we knew it. I won't mention any names (Alice) but someone got a little emotional about being locked in behind the safety bars of the hotel and they ended up on the roof.
Lima - Day 68 - 06/12/2012 (Thursday)
We'd never planned to do a lot today as we had a taxi booked for 5pm to take us to the airport. And this was a good thing as Sarah woke up with a killer head ache and not feeling very well at all. I left her be and chatting with people in the hotel lounge and uploaded some photos and stuff. Come check out time I asked Martin if we could extend the room and they agreed to let us keep our room until 5. Luckily Sarah started to feel better so we decided to go to the souvenir market. Although this wasn't walkable we we'd heard so many horror stories about taxis. Luckily the one we flagged down was fine and we had about an hour looking around and shopping. The taxi back was fine to and it was now 3pm so we had a couple of hours to kill. We sat in the lounge talking about the previous night and looking at the photos. 5pm came and our taxi arrived so we had to do our good byes. This was quite hard after living and being with people for almost 10 weeks. The taxi to the airport was another life in the hands of a crazy driver affair. We arrived really early and sat in the waiting area and this is where I am writing this.
So there ends our trip. We have had some amazing times and some scary times (including part of the story I missed way back on day 2 when we went into the centre of Rio, walking around innocently we crossed a plaza and were approached by two tough looking guys. They started pushing us around and we soon worked out they were mugging us. I tried to resist which was a little bit silly but when one of the guys flashed the case of his knife i knew they were serious so I had to pull out my wallet and hand over all the cash. I think it was about 60 quid. Shaken and cant believing we got mugged in broad day light, we went back to the hotel and hid in our room for the rest of the afternoon - I didn't think posting a story like that on day 2 was the right thing to do as certain parents would have been slightly freaked out and worried about us).
Overall this was a trip of a life time and Sarah and I are so lucky that it was our second trip of a life time. In 15 hours time life returns to normal. Thank you to all those that managed to read my ramblings for so long. You are all MAD!
