April 9th (Thursday) - Day 40 - Penang to Cameron Highlands
Shock horror another 5am start. We were getting a bus at 6am to the mountain ranges of Malaysia. There were 5 other people on the bus. An older couple who are travelling for a year (who live like 5 mins from me) and 3 uni guys (one of which lives 10 mins from me). The 3 guys had been up all night and were fairly drunk. They even had a whiskey on the go. We all spoke for about 30 minutes before they passed out. We checked into our hostel - the dirtiest, dampest one yet and then had a walk around town. 10 minutes later we had seen the whole town. It was a tiny beautiful little place but you need to be booked on a trip to see the area. We resorted to playing in the park on the kids things. We decided to walk down by the river which led us to a jungle walk. We walked quite a way and saw a big waterfall. We walked back into town via the park hehe then in town we saw a sign for a Devonshire cream tea and just could not resist. We went and had scones, jam and cream in the middle of no where in Malaysia. We then could not find anything to do so went back to the hostel and watched a film. We went for dinner (and we seriously over ordered) and then played some cards before getting an early night.
April 10th (Friday) - Day 41 - Cameron Highlands
We chose to do a full day tour of the area by 4x4. We went around town to pick everyone up (which strangely enough were all English people). We drove about 45 minutes and then went off road. The track did didn't look to bad but because it had been raining for days it was really muddy. It really struggled at first and at points the 4x4 was at 45 degrees to the road. 30 mins later we reached the end of the track and it was time for the jungle trek. First we had to cross a very worn out bamboo bridge which was falling apart but was fine once we were over. It was by no means an easy trek. There was a lot of climbing and descending on tricky slopes and it was really wet. We crossed a number of swollen rivers and right at the end the paths were not very well used. We reached our goal which was the largest flower plant in the world. The span is about 1.2 metres and they only flower for 8 days a year. We then had a 2 hour trek back. 1.5 hours into it we stopped at a waterfall for a swim but it started to rain so no one wanted to go in. This made the last 30 minutes interesting as the paths had turned into rivers. We made it back and as soon as we did the sun came out. We were drenched but it was an amazing experience. One I would repeat right now if I could. We drove to a little village and had a blow pipe demonstration. Next we went to a massive tea plantation. I think it was 428 hectares. We had a late lunch (of cakes) then learnt how tea is made. We drove to the top to see the view of the tea which was amazing. Next we went to a butterfly farm but for some reason they had loads of other things. I held the worlds largest beetle, a gecko and even had a centrepede as a bracelet. We did see some butterflys to ;) Hundreds in fact. Finally we went to a strawberry farm that was very uninteresting. After much needed shower we went for dinner played some cards and had another early night.
