Normal 0 The train got in at 4.45am, so we were still very tired and slightly grumpy. We got a taxi to Hanoi Backpackers Hostel as we'd heard it was really nice there. We arrived at 5.30am and the women told us we couldn't check in til 6.30 am, we were not impressed! However internet was free so we went online and I got to speak to Becca! so that was good. 6.30am came and they told us they had no rooms and that we should wait until 11am; as you can imagine we were quite angry as they could've told us an hour ago! An American employee came back from a night out and told us if we were quiet they did have spare beds in the dorms so we could go up there, but that we should have breakfast first, so we did! We were in separate dorms across from each other as mine is all girls and we slept until 11.30am! Although i woke up in the morning and there are men in the beds so clearly its actually a mixed dorm!! We decided to walk around and explore, all down small streets (it looks more like a town than a city with the size of some of the streets!) and there were vespas EVERYWHERE!!! made me very happy! It really is true, scooters rule the roads in vietnam, but it makes it more intimidating to cross the road as they just weave round you! Its quite scary sometime! We went to Ho Khem lake and walked over the red bridge to the small temple in the lake, it was quite cool but very small. We walked round the lake but my flip flops decided to turn on me and cut my foot so we went back to the hostel. When we got back, happy hour began. Big mistake! Every drink was buy one, get one free for an hour and I was drinking these (excuse the name!) passion fruit leg openers - lots of rum and half a passion fruit, so nice! I had to pour my own as I don't like bits and it took so long, it was quite funny. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday they do bbqs upstairs so we had a nice burger as well. We met a guy called Jaksey (English) who we say coming in at 5.30am this morning and he drank a chilli vodka to 'cure the hiccups', then a garlic shot, followed by a snake shot (rice wine with a dead snake in the bottle) and ended up being sick on himself at the bar. it was gross. He also had stitches in his foot that had gone wrong and had been robbed the night before, silly man. Caz and Rianna, the Ozzie couple we met, helped him with his foot and the hostel all decided to go to a bar called Finnegans. I got a lift on a moto by the bar guy. It was a really fun night but when Tone got back to the hostel he clambered on my bunk and fell off (I'm top bunk) and up into his bunk and fell off again! Silly boy! A really good day and night though, a lot of fun.
