Nat and Beck Go Large!
On the journey from Cairns we drove through Innisfail where our friends are working picking bananas. We were tempted to go all CIA/FBI/Wonder Woman and hijack the coach to go and rescue them from the rat pee and general drudgery of work - but we're far too lazy and I was up to a good bit in my Jackie Collins.
The Greyhound dropped us off right outside our new hostel in a part of Mission Beach called Wongaling. Wongaling consists of a million trees, about 5 hostels, 4 people, 3 shops, the 2 of us and 1 bar - aptly named The Local. Our room was in the backpacker section of a holiday resort which was quite nice. Its one of those places that you arrive at, get all excited, and then find out that everything isn't quite cricket. It boasted swimming pools and a five minute walk to the beach. The swimming pool was closed and the beach was covered in debris and jelly fish - but we soldiered on none the less. When we got into our room we were only ones in there and along with a couple of bunks there were two single beds - Yay! For some reason though we had loads of trouble keeping the matresses on the base of the beds, they just kept sliding off. We also had a fridge in our room - which you had to open really carefully lest the door fall off. It was nice though and we ended up sharing with a girl from London called Anna - who was nice if not a little tapped. She was one of these really together people whos backpack only weighed 10kgs, had sensible shoes and went off walking all over the place. She was born in Papau New Guinea and at home she'd volunteered with Oxfam and was an Owl in the Girl Guides (thats a type of leader/head boffin). However we have our suspicions that Miss 'I actually get up in the mornings and make good use of my time' might go down hill after being in Oz, due to the fact she was carrying around a bag of Goon in her hand luggage! Ha!
On our first night there we went to The Local with Anna, we had 1 bev then got off as the only other other patrons in there were two old blokes sitting in the corner in silence. We had a pleasant evening sitting outside our room getting bitten to death drinking vino out of our plastic cups. We were going to find a bar on our last night but decided we'd take advantage of the TV in our room and had a marathon of Family Guy, American Dad, The West Wing and some of the Commonwealth games.
We got up early on Firday and went to catch our bus for the eight hour journey to Airlie Beach. It doesn't actually take that long but there are a million and one food breaks for the driver (selfish) so its numb bums all the way!
Lots of love Beck and Nat xxx
