This morning we had a wonderful buffet breakfast and left our hotel at 8am. It hasn't even been but a few hours since we arrived in our second hotel but I can't tell you how many ferries we have taken and tunnels we went through. We did go through the longest car tunnel in the WORLD. It was approximately 15 miles and we were inside the tunnel for 20 minutes. I tried not to think about how far underground and in the middle of a mountain that we were. It was pretty awesome!
The first ferry that we took we absolutely out of this world. We basically started in a fjord and along the way (as we traveled basically in a big U shape) we saw the towns of Gudvagen, Styvi, Stigen and many others. On this beautiful fjord cruise we saw houses perched precariously on the sides of mountains and sleeping goats on a rocky out-cropping. How in the world did those goats get there? Maybe they were born there! HA. The scenery is a waste to describe simply because I can't do it justice. Towering mountains, placid beautiful clear water, fog and clouds hugging the mountain tops, JOY!!!
We visited Norway's oldest Stave Church, Urnes Stave Church. A stave church is a medieval Christian Church. The name comes from the construction of the building and the load bearing posts are called staves. The one we saw today is a 12th century church and a UNESCO World Heritage location. The church was built around 1130 and stands in its original location. It is so beautiful and it was fascinating to hear about the construction.
We also saw a glacier today. I am sitting here with Geno and we can't for the life of me remember the name of it but either way it was beautiful.
We got to our hotel at 6pm and had INTERNET! YEAH!!! We had a wonderful dinner and then took a nice long walk up to a beautiful church in the village of Loen. The church was open so we went in and read all about the history. It was built in 1837 but a church had been on that site since 1300. So much rich history!
There is so much we saw today but that is the jist of it. BEAUTIFUL scenery and fantastic company.
