Neil's Round the World Trip!
I woke up this morning with a sore stomach. I had to visit el baño and well I have officialy gone liquid (my own euphemism). I took some Immodium and walked down to the bus station. Before I got on I had to again visit the toilet (aah..the joys) I was a little apprehensive about getting on the bus as it doesn't stop for 3 hours. The bus was really cramped and there is no leg room. They don't cater for European legs.
We travelled up through the barren mountains and desolate valleys dropping Aymara people off in what appeared to be the middle of nowhere. We reached the lake and so had to get a boat over while our boat went across on a barge. I sat amongst Bolivians and realised there were only 2 life jackets and about 20 people..hmm...a little worrying. I realised obviously women and children first so yeah I'll be going down with the ship. We crossed the strait safely and got back on the bus which gave us a lovely bumpy trip all the way to the (de facto) capital of Bolivia. We soon entered the valley that La Paz sits in and I was amazed by the mass of sprawling dark red roofs. We drove through the horrible slum of El Alto on the way in. Houses cling to the steep slopes while in the middle of the valley skyscrapers and 60s high rises sit. The huge three peaked mountain of Illimani dominates the skyline.
I got a taxi with an English girl and an Aussie to my hostel. They asked me if I wanted to go to a football match later which I agreed to. However when I got in my room I felt shivery, temperature, aches etc and so I fell asleep and never went to the match. I felt horrible and would wake up intermittently with a dry mouth, pains in my stomach and a headache. This was bad; I knew I'd have to suffer illness at some point. I finally got to sleep at 2am after an inconsiderate English couple next door stopped playing their stupid novelty pan-pipes and speaking loudly (the walls are paper thin).
