Neil's Round the World Trip!
We were picked up at 8am by our bus which was full of other gringoes. I was seated next to Beata and so we chatted for most of the journey through the mountians and coastal roads. We eventually reached the Peruvian customs border and changed our Soles for Bolivianos. We then ealked up the 200m hill to the Bolivian border and passed through unhindered with another stamp in the passport.
The sun was shining brightly when we arrived in the scenic town of Copacabana which is right on the shores of Lake Titicaca and close to the tourist attraction of Isla Del Sol. Myself and Beata ran away from the hostel touts and found a hostel called "Emperador". It was great and for 80p a night just the right price (plus hot showers and they really are hot). I had a fantastic shower just what I needed after last night's ordeal!
We went for a walk around the town and visited the beautiful cathedral. Outside the cathedral there were a number of cars and trucks all with flower garlands on them. Also people were pouring beer over the bonnet and tyres. We asked a local what was happening and he told us the cars are lined up to receive a blessing from the Virgin Mary so they will be accident free for the rest of the year.
We daundered down the cobbled streets and eventuallyt reached the lake shore, there were a number of trout (trucha) restaurants. We were lured into a restaurant and had delicious grilled trout and rice.
We then walked to fruit market, I bought 3 bananas for 7 pence. We were walking back to our hostel when we passed a little girl who shouted: "gringoes". I felt guilty having bought 3 bananas for 7p and gave her a banana.
We walked back through the cathedral and looked at the virgin mary dolls and holy water you can buy.
Copacabana nestles between hills and the lake. There is a large hill that dominates the skyline called Cerro Calvario. Apparently a great place to watch the sunset. I took a snooze on the warm balcony back at the hostel and then walked up the hill to watch the beautiful sunset. We bought some Paceña beer from a vendor and sipped it watching the sun sink below the lake.
We walked back to the hostel and listened to Manu Chao before heading to a restaurant aptly named "Bolivia". It played 80s music for most of the night. I ordered a pizza and it was really bad almost like a microwaved pizza. All soggy and bland. On our way back to the hostel we past indigenous women with bowler hats and large skirts sweeping the plaza.
