Krabi Town isn't that big really and it seems to be just a stopover point on the Andaman coast that people visit, prior to hitting the islands. Which is exactly what I have done. I have been here for about 24 hours now, arriving yesterday afternoon at about 1500.
I had some amazing seafood as soon as I arrived and then spent last night aimlessly walking around the night markets. The plan was to have a quiet night. I had to see a doctor in Bangkok because of a bite that seemed to be spreading and she gave me some cream and told me to have a rest from alcohol. I don't know whether that was because the medication dictates this (It didn't say it anywhere in the "instructions") or because I was still a little hungover from my night in Kanchanburi and probably smelling of booze… She was probably just looking out for me! Anyway, the leg was on the mend and I got enticed into a bar that was playing Nirvana. The barman was called "Charlie" and he literally looked like a Mexican drug lord. Very friendly though, as are all the Thai people I have met so far and he made a great mojito.
Today I dragged myself out of my pit at around 1000 as I wanted to go and visit the Wat Tham Seua (Tiger Cave Temple). As well as this temple there is a mountain you can climb which apparently has amazing views. I read the reviews with people moaning about how hard the 1237 steps are to climb but a touch of bravado kicked in for me and I just thought they were over exaggerating. I thought for a start, if I take out 2 steps with every step then I am already halving this amount and 600 odd isn't too bad. On reflection this was very naïve seeing as though I am somewhat virtually challenged with bloody small legs. The steps were ridiculous. Very steep and it was a hell of a challenge getting up there. The sweat (mainly consisting of mojito) was literally pouring out of me. Add in to the mix that half way up there are a gang of monkeys waiting to jump on you and steal your things, which is not what you need when you're hanging out your arse. It was worth it though in the end. Amazing views, although it started to thunder and rain as soon as I got to the top. One thing that really did bamboozle me was the dog living at the top. I had so many questions I wanted to ask about this dog… Why is he there? How long has he been there? Does he want to go down but just too old to make it? What does he eat? Is he happy? Is he lonely? The list goes on but unfortunately no one was there to answer them so I patted his head, gave him an m&m and went on my way. I thought going down would be a lot easier but every step I took; my knees were shaking uncontrollably. Add the fact I was a little on edge waiting for those monkeys to pounce. Luckily the little scamps left me alone. I blanked them on the way up, put my head down and just stormed past them and I think this worked in my favour. I then had a bit of a walk in the jungle, saw some caves and a huge spider. But wasn't in there long because I really wasn't wearing suitable rig… Flipflops shorts and t-shirt walking around a jungle probably doesn't cut it. The monks actually live there though; they have their own little shacks which somehow all have electricity too.
All in all, Krabi Town has been a short but pleasant stop over. I have just decided I am heading to Koh Phi Phi next which seems like the next port of call for most people. Booked into a hostel for a few nights and plan to hire a moped to explore, should be a good few days I reckon.
