The Cameroon Highlands are famous for their tea plantations so we knew it was going to be a place we would love. Because of the conditions needed for tea growing it means that it never gets too hot or too cold. Lovely.
The drive there was pretty through all the green hills. That afternoon we decided to have a wander around. There is just one street full of hotels and cafés amidst all the plantations in the little town so our wander didn't really take very long! We just ended up relaxing for the afternoon while mentally preparing ourselves for the following days tour.
We woke up early and our guide whisked us away deep into the rainforest through foot deep mud to hunt for the elusive Rafflesia. As all you botanists are no doubt aware - this is the worlds biggest flower. After a sweaty hour long trek through dense jungle we clambered up a steep muddy bank and were confronted with the biggest flower we have ever seen. Apparently it's actually a fungus, but it looks like a flower and that's enough for us!
After this, we walked back and jumped into our 4x4 and sped off towards the Boh tea plantation. As we turned in, all the Brits were in awe of the valleys filled with tea bushes. We had lunch on a balcony with panoramic views over the main valley and, of course, had a few cups of tea. After this we had an extremely brief tour of the factory and the five processes involved in tea production.
Our tour continued with a trip to the butterfly farm (why do people farm butterflies?!) where we saw not only butterflies, but a variety of local wildlife including snakes, spiders and other weird looking bugs. We had a great time playing with the tarantulas, but for some reason Sarah was more entertained by the bunnies...
Our final stop for the day was the strawberry farm. Apparently, as well as tea, strawberries are also famous from this region. We ate some strawberry tart, cheesecake, had a fresh strawberry milkshake (which was amazing), and saw some real strawberry plants. I know we get these in England, but they seemed very proud of them so it would have been rude not to look impressed.
Feeling suitably sick from the rich foods, we headed back to our hotel for a well earned shower and rest. We had a nice dinner, and early night, and for the first time in a long while, a lie in! We woke up refreshed and pleased with our accomplishments from the previous day and hopped on the bus to our next stop, Ipoh.
