The train to Singapore arrived in late as usual, but we have grown so used to this it didn't really surprise us. We had an interesting time entering the country with Luke being pulled into the customs office for illegally trying to smuggle in a blow pipe he had bought from the Malaysia. He was gone for quite a while and we were beginning to worry about the train carrying on without us, but he eventually came out (still with his blowpipe - apparently it is allowed) walking a bit like John Wayne. He wont talk about it...
When we finally arrived in Singapore, we met two other Scottish guys who were staying in the same hostel as us. We ended up sharing a cab and heading out to dinner. This turned into a fairly late night without even meaning to.
The next day we decided to check out some of the Singapore shops. After a day of shopping we headed back to get changed and ready for the horse racing. This is something that Luke and Simon did in Hong Kong and were eager to return to. The night was great fun with us all winning some races.
We decided to spend another day looking around Singapore the next day. First stop, Raffles Hotel for the famous Singapore Sling. We had great fun throwing peanuts around while drinking our cocktails. Raffles is the most amazing hotel, so beautiful. Its definitely an aim to be able to spend a night there!
That evening we headed out to the Night Safari. This is one of the top things to do in Singapore and was so much fun. Its more like a zoo than a safari, with each enclosure slightly lit (apparently its special lights so it doesn't affect the animals). We saw so much, with one of the best bits being the bat enclosure. They had a flying fox in there which was incredible to watch flying around your heads.
Day four we decided to catch a bus tour around Singapore as we still hadn't seen the main areas. We ended up walking along Orchard Road (a fancy shopping street) for hours just window shopping. That night we got tickets for the Singapore Flyer, the equivalent of the London Eye. We waited until it was dark before doing it and it was amazing. The views were incredible.
The next day Tom went watch shopping and finally bought some watches. We have had to walk into every watch shop we've seen while being in Singapore, hopefully this means we never have to look at watches again. Ha! We decided to splash out for lunch at headed back to Raffles for their lunchtime special. Fish and chips with a beer. A little taste of home!
We got back that evening and said goodbye to the lads. Luke and Simon are heading to Oz and NZ a week before us. Its going to be very strange just the two of us! We have loved the past 3 months with them, its like a little family out here.
Our final day was spent just the two of us. We headed to Sentosa Island to the south of Singapore to go to the most southerly point of continental Asia. There isn't much at that end of the island, but we felt we had to go and considered it the end point of our overland adventure.
With that out of the way, we headed to Underwater World. It's an interactive aquarium where you can touch a lot of the fish (they even have special tanks you can put your hands through the side without it all spilling everywhere - magic), and they have a tunnel you can walk through and see sharks, rays and all kinds of fish. Sarah had a great time chasing the sharks and rays down the tunnel.
Outside, there is a pool with pink dolphins splashing around. We missed the show, but were quite content to watch them splash around for a while. However, after about 15 minutes, we were caught in a torrential downpour and dashed inside for cover until it passed.
Once the weather cleared up, we headed out and walked around the island until we reached the waterfront where Universal Studios is situated. We walked around a few of the overprices shops until the rain started again and headed to the Hard Rock Cafe for a drink and some cover.
Once the rain subsided, we decided to brave the journey back to the hostel. En route, we booked our bus tickets up to Kuala Lumpur - our last stop in Asia.
We've had a great time in Singapore. Its definitely a place we'll be visiting again (hopefully with more money we can spend!). It's a really diverse place with different languages being spoken by everyone there and you just feel welcome everywhere. It's also a nice taste of home at the end of a long stint through Asia which has definitely been appreciated. We couldn't recommend it highly enough to anyone and we can't wait to visit again. Obviously staying in Raffles next time......
