We arrived in Georgetown, Penang at around 4pm so had already missed most of the day. But we decided to head out on a wander to see what Georgetown is like. We all instantly fell in love with the place. There is such a mixture of architecture: British, French, Chinese and Indian. Its also so peaceful, South East Asia is so hectic it was lovely to be in a calm place.
While wandering around we stumbled upon a beautiful mosque. We were just taking some pictures, when a guy came out and invited us in for a tour. He explained all about Islam and the different areas of the mosque and what they are used for. The guy was so lovely, he was obviously trying to sell Islam to us, but he did it in a very nice way. After, he gave us each a book on Islam which makes for a very interesting read.
We left back for the hostel feeling very positive. There had been so much negativity in Thailand, it was nice to be back in places where you can feel some culture and the people are nice. We all felt like we had some travelling inspiration again.
The next day we decided to spend some more time exploring Georgetown. This place is another World Heritage Site. We went to Fort Cornwallis to learn about the history of the city, went chocolate tasting and generally admired the architecture. It was a very laid back day!!
We have been very surprised so far by how much of a Chinese and Indian presence there is here. Finding Malaysian restaurants is not an easy task!
The next day we decided to catch a bus over to the Cameron Highlands to see some of the tea plantations. Georgetown has been so great, its definitely a place we want to spend some more time.
