The caravan park was surprisingly quiet over night but by 730am everyone was hitching on and moving out. By 10am new vans were rolling in! We had a big breakfast and did some laundry and then Matty and I went to the local supermarket for supplies. While we were there it turned 11am and we did our minutes silence for Remembrance Day, causing Matty to ask lots of questions but he could relate it all back to the War Memorial in Canberra so he has learnt something this trip! We all went down to the beach when Matty and I got home but it was a disaster! The beach was covered in seaweed and the tide was out exposing lots of little sharp black clamshells. As everyone tried to walk into the water they cut their feet on the little shells. Jonny came out crying almost immediately with a deep gash to his heel that was pouring blood. I had to go home and collect the car and the medical box to dress his foot and by the time I got back Nick was in the water with Matty while he had a quick swim. Nick had thongs on in the water and the shells went straight through his thongs and pierced his feet in multiple places as he tried to get out. We gave up on the beach and came home where it was hot, crowded and we were pissed off! We decided to hit the road and spend the night on the Nullabor instead! We had lunch first, charged up all things electrical and topped up with water and were on the road by 3pm. While the outside temperature reached 38 degrees we were nice and cool in the car and the sense of space on the wide-open road was awesome. Around 7pm we reached a stop on the cliffs of the Great Australian Bite and stopped for dinner. We had the place to ourselves until the last 5 minutes when two whizz-bangs came in to join us - time to move on! Nick and I had a coffee while the kids climbed into pj's and then we were back in the car and on the road again. The sun was just setting as we reached the border of WA and it only took us 5 minutes to clear quarantine. The quarantine agent welcomed us home! - and then gave all the kids a lolly pop!! With the 2.5-hour time difference it was now 5.30pm WA time and pitch black - goodbye daylight savings! There were bunny rabbits running all over the road and at one point we had to swerve to avoid a kangaroo. I think we drove over the end of his tail with the car but missed him with the van! We drove on for another hour by which time the kids had had enough. Jonny was in tears as his foot was hurting him and Matty had turned into a Goldfish asking 'when are we there' every 3 seconds as his brain couldn't retain the answer!! We pulled into a great stop at Mundrabilla, way off the highway, which had shelter and rainwater tanks. A few back packers were camping under the shelters and were just making dinner as we arrived. Another van was also parked but looked fast asleep. We got the kids into bed, walked the dog and then had a quick but refreshing shower before reading for an hour. It was great to stretch out and seemed so much better then being in Ceduna!
