Left Kenora heading for Thunder Bay. Made our way to Dryden for breakfast and a quick drive around town. Dryden is a mill town and it was kind of neat coming into it from the west as you see the mill right along side the small river right inside in the town. You go under a railway overpass and along a small series of waterfalls caused by the dam the mill built. The town was pretty quiet that time of the morning.
Had a long and boring drive to Thunder Bay. The most interesting was just east of Raith. It was marked as the Continental Divide where the division of East and West rivers are. From that point all waters flow to the Atlantic.
We found Thunder Bay to be a dirty depressing town with whole sections boarded up. People stumbled around either drunk or drugged. I'm sure there are nicer areas but we drove all over town and it looked the same. One wonders how the town has survived although there are big box stores around. The prettiest area was where at some point the town dammed up a creek and made Boulevard Lake with a small park and walkways around it. From the spillway a small amount of water ran over layers of black rock. I was excited to spot something nice here so we stopped for a picture. We stopped at the small overpass and snapped a few pics and I was thinking that maybe we had just been in the "wrong" area of town as it was nice with the little park and walkways. Then we looked below us where the water ran under and saw rusted old metal pipes, garbage and an old bike that had obviously been there awhile. Very sad. The only saving grace to the whole town was the Terry Fox memorial at the Visitor Info east of town. Unfortunately it was too late and we were too tired to go on so we stayed the night.
