We triple checked our car hire contract and came to the conclusion that as we had a 4-wheel drive we could drive from Helenvale to Cape Tribulation along the coastal track.
Interestingly the majority of the journey to Bloomfield was on macadamised roads with only a small sections of gravel.
It was an interesting drive with many small villages nestled amidst the rainforest, mainly alternative lifestyle homes and in some cases also primitive houses.
The main river crossing across the Bloomfield River was really a causeway and the rest of the river crossings were dry until we got to the Daintree.
The Wallebuddy ?? and Emmagen creeks were quite full of water and we had water above the wheel arches but not in the doors . There was lots of steep inclines and declines; some cemented but most just dirt and gravel
Just after Emmagen creek we stopped to watch a cassowary and her chick feeding on the side of the road.
They were very patient and David even had time to change lenses.
The trip up was under 3 hours going the longer yet faster route. Almost 100km less on the coast road yet it took us 4 hours to get home.
Sam had booked Finz restaurant for dinner and it was another hot and humid night.
