We woke up to the alarm in the morning still a bit tired and to the sound of heavy rain. We got up and ready and quickly packed our things, only being interrupted by a cockroach hiding under Shivani's bag.
We went down, checked out and arranged a taxi to the airport. We then had a quick breakfast before getting in the cab. It was raining hard and we were glad to get out of Rio and hoped for better weather in the north. It was a fair distance to the airport but there was no traffic so we quickly arrived. We checked in and then waited for the flight. I wrote my blog and Shivani read her book.
We boarded the plane, after a gate change, but found out after that it would be delayed due to the heavy rain. It was almost an hour before we took off but luckily it was only a short flight. I slept a little and wrote my blog while Shivani watched puss in boots, the story of which we had amusingly heard in Mendoza from an American women sitting next to us at lunch.
We eventually got to Salvador to find the skies clearer and no rain. After getting our luggage we took a taxi to the hostel. It was a pretty long journey but we eventually arrived in the historic centre where our hostel was. Shivani immediately took a liking to the small cobbled streets old buildings. I was wary of its bad reputation for crime.
We were dropped outside our hostel and quickly checked in to our room which was a nice little apartment that had a kitchen and little balcony with hammock. We were shown round the hostel which had a nice little common area and terrace too. The staff were friendly and helpful and there was plenty of info on what to do.
We settled into our room and then went down to tell the hostel we wanted an extra night. We also enquired about what was going on and found out there was a Brazilian dance show that was supposed to be good. It was already late afternoon so we decided we would go get some food before going to the show.
We walked out and headed towards where the theatre for the show would be. The streets were full of tourists and tourist shops selling souvenirs. They were also very well policed which made me relaxed and uneasy at the same time.
We found the theatre and learnt the box office didn't open till 7pm so put our names down and went to find something to eat. We went to a place recommended in the book called Zulu. They had a mixed menu with a few vegi options. I had piri piri chicken and Shivani a Thai curry. The food was really good and they had an excellent chilli sauce too.
After we finished our meal we got chatting to the owner who was from Norwich. He gave us his travel guide which had some useful info and some advice on the surrounding areas. We then said our goodbyes and headed to the theatre to get our tickets. After getting them we still had to wait 30 minutes till the doors opened so went for a walk. We went to the main square which had a few stalls selling drinks and plenty more tourist shops.
After our walk we headed to the theatre and waited for the show. It was really busy and when the doors opened there was a rush to get the best seats. They all offered a good view however and we sat down and waited for the show. We were told we could not take pictures before getting 5 different types of dance. The performance was full of energy and the dances were all different and good. I could see why the show was highly rated and was impressed with the fire dance and the dance with sticks and swords.
The performance was quite short however and after it finished we headed back to the hostel stopping on the way to buy drinks. On getting back we did some more research on where we should go next and actually found it was quite busy everywhere as it was high season in Brazil. Shivani made a few enquiries by email while we drank our left over bacardi from new years on our terrace. We then headed to bed looking forward to a good nights sleep.
