I awoke early in the morning but felt refreshed as we had slept so early the night before. It was 6am and our pick up wasn't till 7.45am. I browsed the internet for a while before getting up and ready. Shivani woke up soon after and we both packed our bags ready to leave.
We just had time for a quick breakfast which turned out to be very good. There was fresh fruit and a delicious smoothie. Also some good bread and cheese. There was also a local vegetable that I thought was a fruit, bit into only to find it was savoury and that I shouldn't eat the skin.
After we had eaten we came to reception to find out guide, Elso, waiting for us. So we checked out and went to the car that was waiting. We needed to pay him so first went to the bank to withdraw money. I took out the maximum I could but we needed more and found Shivanis cards weren't working. We tried another bank and found Shivanis card still didn't work, they must have been blocked. I was able to take out money again though so we paid Elso and got on our way.
We headed for the port where we would take a boat across the Amazon. Before we took the boat we stopped to look at the fish that had been freshly caught that morning. There were all different kinds and we took pictures while Elso explained about them.
We then picked up some supplies before heading to the dock where we took a speed boat. We went out to the meeting of the rivers, where Elso explained about the two rivers and we put our hands in the water and felt the temperature difference. It was a pretty interesting sight and the temperature difference was amazing too.
We then carried on to the other side of the river where we disembarked and took another car. We drove for a bit and stopped at a pond which had gaint water lilies, the symbol of the Amazon. Elso was very knowledgable and explained the life cycle. We also learnt that he was born and raised in the jungle and didn't see civilisation till he was 17. It was pretty amazing since he spoke such good english.
We then moved on to another smaller river where we stopped to catch a boat to our lodge. We had to wait a while there and looked round the shop which sold pretty much everything. It was getting hot now, it had been raining before, and we could see the weather was very changeable.
Elso said our boat hadn't arrived but he arranged to share one with another tour group and we squeezed on board and set off. We had a 20 minute journey down the river and were now getting away from civilisation to a quiet part that was still inhabited though. We arrived at our lodge that was very rustic and basic and waited in the main room for our room key. It was very peaceful here and although there weren't any luxuries and it was basic I liked it.
We got shown to our room which was actually quite nice and happily had a/c too. We were told we would have lunch in about an hour and could relax till then. Shivani slept and I blogged before we got a knock to say lunch was ready. We went down to the main room to find a few other people there who were also on the tours.
We then ate lunch which consisted of salad, rice, fish, fruit, bread and a very tasty bean stew. It was basic but good and we ate well, with Shivani getting a plate of boiled potatoes as her vegi extra. We were then told we had about an hour before we would go out to see some dolphins and fish for piranhas. I slept while Shivani read until they came to get us.
We went down to the main room where Elso was waiting for us. He took us down to the dock where we boarded a small motorised canoe and set off down the river. As we drove down all signs of civilisation disappeared as we entered a protected area.
We went down the river and Elso explained some more things to us before saying we were going to stop and he had a surprise for us. He made us leave the boat and we walked through the jungle, Elso barefoot, to a really old big tree. It was a pretty amazing site but we were more worried about the Mosquitos that were biting us both. We had used natural repellent and it did not work. Shivani got loads of bites all over her body and I got quite a few too.
We quickly got out of the jungle and back into the boat and headed further down river where we got our first site of the pink dolphins, coming up for air. We carried on a little further up where we then stopped to do piranha fishing. Elso explained how to do it and immediately caught a fish. He and the driver made it look really easy and quickly caught 4 or 5 fish. Shivani and I then tired but we were not so fast and kept losing our bait. Shivani did however manage to catch one after a while and it was pretty big too. I still wasn't having luck and then Shivani caught another. I carried on till I eventually caught one, even though it was small.
After that we rowed a little way back down the river to a canal where we saw some small monkeys. Elso also found a vine there which he said we could swing on. I said I would do it and climbed up the bank to swing. Elso showed me how it was done and then I had my go. I didn't go as far as him but managed it anyway. I had another go but almost fell off so called it a day.
We then went to a spot to see the dolphins as the sunset. It was a perfect scene on the river as there was no one else around and we could see lots of dolphins come up for air. We sat there quite a while while Elso gave us more info and it got dark.
It was now time to spot caimen and Elso used his torch to search amongst the reeds. It was pitch black now and we could hear everything but not see too much. There were bats flying around and the fireflys lit up the trees. Occasionally we could see the reflection of the caimans eyes and Elso tried to find a baby one to catch. He tired a few times before eventually catching one. Shivani and I then both took turns to hold it before Elso explained about them and the other species that lived in the river.
After that it was time to head back and we slowly made our way back to the lodge. It was almost time for dinner and we played dominoes while we waited. Dinner was them served and we ate a little as we weren't too hungry. We talked to two Danish guys who had been here a few days before finishing our dinner, having another game of dominoes and heading to bed, being told to watch the path carefully for snakes.
It was only 9pm but we would start at 7am tomorrow for breakfast and then a jungle trek. We cleaned up for bed before setting up our mosiquito net and going to sleep. It had been a fun day, although we had been bitten a lot, and I was glad we came.
