Another day another wonder - seems to be how it is in Rome.
Well we took the plunge and used the Metro today and two things came from it. One the only thing our Metro has in common is trains are involved. If you miss a train you only wait two minutes for the next (and it's on time). The second thing is we have no hope of lugging all our bags down the 3 sets of stairs so again our savior Salome has come to our rescue again and has organized a car to take us to the Termini for our train to Florence on Wednesday.
We got of at Flaminio and went to the Piazza Del Popolo. It is a large square with an Egyptian obelisk from 1200BC in the centre and has massive fountains at each end one of King Neptune and the other Romulus and Remus. It also houses the Santa Maria del Popolo - the "Earth" in Angels & Demons but enough of the history lesson.
A stroll up Via del Corso and we found the Ferrari shop - heaven in a symphony of red. We also visited a tiny but ornate church where I collected prayer cards - I felt like I was a kid again.
We went back to the Trevi fountain as Tarn wanted to bond with it. We were so lucky Friday morning as there may have been 50 people but today looked like 500 or more.
We had a spot of lunch in a nice hidden tavolo calda and rested the size 13's which the cobbled streets and paths give a good hiding.
Finally we went to the Pantheon which is impossible to describe. It's 2000 years old and it's only source of light is the open circle in the roof called the oculus which means it is open to the elements but it's flawless. I am glad we came back to look at the inside. We topped this main course of with a desert of chintzy tourist shot with a Roman guard - great fun though.
On the way back to the bus we visited Chiesa de Gesu which is a massive church which is home to 2 saints and one of them has a glass tomb but thankfully had a death mask so no gruesome bits to scare the flock off.
At the bus stop guessing which bus to get we were overheard by a woman from Taylors Lakes who had been in Rome for a week already and was a dab hand at getting around by bus. It was nice to hear another Aussie voice and although I love the Italian language you hear it loud and often (mixed in with the Roman overture of endless car horns) it gets a tad overbearing on occasions.
Well tomorrow is our last day in Rome so I am off to rest the feet and try to work out what to see tomorrow. We will still miss a lot but as I said earlier it's all the more reason to return - Its an amazing place.
Buona Notte
