Very exciting day today, mum's birthday!! Also the Sound of Music tour. bus came at 9 to collect us. Just finished a great brekkie of scrambled eggs with bacon, cheese and ham in it. Drove around Salzburg and had a brief history. Saw the rich part, very nice. Apparently the houses are never sold, just pass down from one generation to the next. Went to the back of the mansion first and saw the terrace and the lake where the children fall in from the boat. Then drove on to the gazebo. unfortunately it's locked so you can't dance around it as me and Jenny wanted to but was still cool. Apparently you used to be able to til a elderly lady tried it and broke her hip! Saw the nunnery and various other bits before driving out to the country, just reaching the peak of the hil when 'the hills are alive with the sound of music' came on the stereo, very cheesy but amusing. From then on had the soundtrack playing so a few of us were singing along. Went out to a small village called St Gilgen, stunning. Went to see some of the lakes before stopping in Mondsee. a lunch break and also has the church where the baron and Maria got married. Guide very funny, reminded us of Roy Walker the catchphrase guy. Came back into town for about 1 30. Went to the Mirabelle gardens and saw the fountain they dance around, again a beautiful place. Walked through the town again and headed for the fortress. Funicular too expensive so decided to walk around the rest of town instead. found a shop selling hundreds of thousands of handpainted eggs. Had Christmas ones, Easter ones and just pretty ones, amazing place. Most of the shops were shut being Sunday and came back to the hostel about 5. Had a little snooze before dinner at 7. Ate at the hostel and had schnitzel and a traditional potato dish and salad, yummy. Came out and used the internet. Headed back to the hostel and chatted to some people outside for about an hour. Went to bed about midnight.
