After arriving at 07.30 at Padang Besar the Malaysian border we sat until 10.40 whilst customs and immigration procedures took place. After lunch we arrived at the Royal Town of Kuala Kangsar. We bordered a bus and went to a Mosque which we were unable to go in because it was Friday so Friday's are a good day for visiting Mosques. Apparently it was designed and built by Arthur Hubback, a British archtect, who applied the same Indian Mughal design elements to the Ipoh railway station and the Kuala Lumpur railway station.

We also went to the Bamboo Palace constructed without a blueprint and entirely without nails, the walls of the palace are woven from spliced bamboo strips with diamond patterns.

Finally we visited the Sultan Azlan Shah Gallery. This is a restored former palace known locally as Istana Ulu or Istana Kota! It houses the mementoes, family photographs, trophies and state regalia, among other documents and personal belongings of the present Sultan. On the way back to the train we saw what is apparently the oldest rubber tree in Malaysia. In 1882 Sir Hugh Low, then the British Resident of Perak, brought seven rubber trees from South America and planted one in the gardens of Kuala Kangsar. The rubber trees became a highly lucrative cash crop for the country when the automobile industry boomed in the west.
