G'day Australia, here on Australia Day 2015. Woke this morning to a very grey and drizzly morning over Sydney harbour. But has it affected the great Aussie spirit? No!
Watched the view from our bedroom window for a while before heading out. There was so much going on on the water. Hundreds of boats heading every which way. Three P&O cruise ships are moored a little way out. The ferries and other harbour boats are zooming across the water. A big grey aircraft carrier sailed in and helicopters circled overhead. Then came a flotilla of ships of all sizes parading round the harbour, headed by a fire boat spraying great plumes of water. So much activity.
Dragged ourselves away from the panorama after a while and headed up to the Rocks areas - the original settlement of Sydney. Little lanes, boutique shops, interesting old buildings. All pretty chic. Live music playing in the streets for Aussie Day.
Down on the water a floating stage moored up for a while with a band playing. The pontoon stage was moving to different points around the harbour as the day progressed. A giant inflatable turtle crossed the water. Three jets did a fly past. A fly past of an A389 was scheduled to take place at low level but must have been cancelled due to the weather conditions.
We walked back through to Circular Quay and took the ferry round to Darling Harbour.
Went to the Red Tape Brewing Company for fish and chips (thought of Maddy and Sally Anne, fish and chip celebrants - Sally Anne the fish was basa). Washed it down with a pint of the on site breweries own Perfect Storm lager. By now the rain was coming down much heavier and we knew there was no way we were going to stay in Darling Harbour for 5 more hours just so we could watch the fireworks in Cockle Bay at 8.45 so we hopped on the next ferry back to Circular Quay.
Rain abated a bit by the time we docked so we walked down to the Opera House and walked a circle around it. The roof is amazing close up - tiled all over with small Ivory coloured squares. Really pretty. And then the rain came down ever heavier so we've made it back to the hotel to continue watching whatever is going on from our bedroom window ... Not a great deal at the moment. 7pm and all looks misty.

Maggie Yes we forget that the weather can be unpredictable in Sydney. I was there once at this time of year and we had a lot of cloudy days. Still a beautiful city though, whatever the weather. Hope you enjoy the fireworks - you have an ideal vantage point from your hotel room if the weather is too dismal!
Mary Wright Brill...have a great time. been in Australia for the passed week. Melbourne for the tennis, up all night. Go Raffa. Looking forward to the rest of your journey. xxx
Sue My friend and I spent a very wet Sunday afternoon in Syndey and the only place open was the Opera House where we sat through a very modern version spoken in Australian accents of The comedy of Errors . It was so bad we enjoyed it in the end. When the sun is out it is wonderful walking around the harbour. I know you'll have a fabulous time.
Sally Anne Fish & chips and a stroll round our hood The Rocks, jealous. Circular key is just fabulous, we used to go every morning & evening to soak up the atmosphere. Great to see the fireworks from your room xx
