This morning we got woken up by Asaki's mum at 10am saying we should've checked out already, and that we had 10 minutes to get out of there. So that was an interesting start to the day, we both just rushed to get ready and then went to meet her mum and her mum's friend. We met them at what was apparently a really famous market in Kyoto. It seemed a lot like the Queen Vic Markets actually except with japanese food.
After that we looked around for a bus that could takes to this temple that had traditional japanese plays, and couldn't find one so in the end we got a taxi. Once we got there the play had probably been going for about 20 minutes but we went in anyway. The play itself was really slow moving, it was a story i think could have been told in about 10 minutes if they were aloud to speak, but it ended up being an hour of sudden head and fan movements to a very repetative drum beat. It was still interesting to see, but only once.
We then took a bus from there to a really nice park, which was right on the otherside of town and then only stayed there for about 20 minutes, but it was a really nice spot. It was very serene with a big wide river going through this valley and mountains off in the distance.
Then we took a taxi to the temple of the 1001 buddhas. And yes I did count them, there were 997, and 4 spots had little signs saying that they were absent. It was really cool place seeing all those statues that had been made over 500 years ago and were still made almost identitical. It was like playing one of the spot the difference games to find one between two statues. The buddhas were seperated equally into 2 sections with a few other statues and a big buddha in between and also other spirit statues along the front. Unfortunately you weren't allowed to take photograph's inside the temple though.
After that, we called the cab driver that we had before, who was an absolute legend, and he ended up giving us his own personal tour of Kyoto, taking us to the spots that are always quiet but really nice, so we got off for ten minutes or so at each and then kept going. Our last stop was right up in the mountains that surround the city. The sun was just finishing setting and the whole cities lights were on. It was seriously an amazing sight. There was also a guy up there that had really powerful binoculars, and he let us have a look through them at a few things which was really cool.
After spending about half an hour there, the cab driver took us back to Kyoto station but we still had about an hour to spare so we decided to go to the top of Kyoto tower. It was really cool up there, it was like the spot up in the mountains except right in the middle of it all. Then we just got the Shinkansen back, which was just as cool as the first time. It was quite expensive overall but I think it's definitely worth seeing Kyoto.
