I slept in this morning as i was so tored but Daniel woke me up with a kiss before going to get breakfast and a cup of tea. I then joined him once i got up and also had a cuppa, red inn is great as there is unlimited tea and coffee throughout the day! And lord knows that we've missed english breakfast tea! He saved me two slices of toast but i wasn't really hungry so just had my tea and a cigarette instead.
Today we planned to hunt down all of the art work in georgetown but first set off to the pier to book our boat ticket to langkawi tomorrow. We chose not to do it from our hotel as it would cost a lot more. As we walked to the pier we passed st george's church again so went in but the security guard said it was closed until 14:00, damn it! We went into the first ticket office we saw where we were greeted warmly by the man behind the desk. We booked an open return ticket as we don't know when we will come back but in the morning i managed to fins a cheap hotel in a good area so booked three nights there. He told us all about the island and the different things to see, he also spoke of penang and its diversity but said that the chinese population want to take over things, which doesn't sound too far off. We paid 126RM each which is around £30 so not the cheapest ticket but hopefully it will be worth it!
We left the ticket office and walked dow a big main road where we went into the same cafeteria we were in yesterday. Dan bought one of the rice and chicken packages wrapped in banana leaf for 4RM which is around 90p and so we told the woman to keep the change from 5RM but she was so sweet she didn't accept it and was adamant that he took it back. We sat down and ate it before going on a wonder of all of the other stalls. We stopped outside one selling a dish of spicy soup with noodles and shrimp so the man told us to sit down while he made us two bowls. It looked delicious and tasted even better. There were two types of noodles, very thin rice noodles and thicker egg noodles, as i still wasn't very hungry i struggled to finish it and after ten minutes of eating, it didn't even look like i had made a dent.
After we had tried to finish our bowls of soupy, spicy noodles we sat down for a fag. The cafeteria seems to be a very popular place to eat lunch as we saw lots of workers from banks either sitting down and eating or getting stuff to takeaway. There was even a car park for people to park in and visit the food area. With our tummies full we headed out on our hunt for the famous street art around georgetown. We have a map that marks where all of the famous artwork is and so we walked around to hunt them all down and get some great photos. It is very hot today so we got an ice pole near one of the paintings, i got a durian flavoured pole and dan went for orange but i couldn't eat mine as it tasted like a bad smell we had on one of the sleeper busses which put me off a lot! While we walked around looking for the art i stopped into a cool little shop where i bought a mini dream catcher to either hang in my room or in my car (when i eventually get one!). I also popped into a small shop selling gems and jewels to ask if there are any silver jewellery shops nearby so i can buy a ring for Alex and he said either in georgetown or the shopping mall but as it's so hot i thought i would leave it for when we get back to penang after Langkawi.
Once we found all of the spots of street art and got lots of photos we headed back to the hotel to chill in the air conditioned room and then sit outside with a cuppa until it got to dinner time. For dinner we decided to go back to Kapitam, the place Gabriel had taken us last night so we went to sit upstairs, it was more quiet than it was yesterday. We both ordered a Tandoori set which was served on an aluminium tray with naan bread, onion and dipping sauces. It was the most tender chicken i think i've ever had in my life and tasted like heaven! I could have easily eaten another one! Once we paid we decided to go back to the weird little shop for a beer and as we approached, some old chinese men smiled and cheered us. We bought three beers for 10RM and sat down on plastic chairs outside. The old man came to join us and we had a long chat with him about penang and his origins, he was very very old and was dribbling while drinking beer, he was also quite pissed. We also saw an incredibly drunk indian man drive his scooter up to the shop and stumble in to buy beer before very drunkily getting back on his bike and riding off again. Lots of people came to this shop of their bikes for beer, i think its quite well known! We got talking to two men sat next to us, one looked thai and the other indian. They are both christian one called christopher snd the other one paul. They told us that in penang during ramandan, if you want to buy food you have to show your id card to prove you're not muslim because if the police catch a muslim person eating hey get thrown into prison! Its the same with alcohol too! Crazy! We sat talking with them for at least an hour, paul gave us all spring rolls he took home from work (he works as security for g4s).
After a few beers and a good chat with the malaysian guys dan and i decided to head back for some sleep as it was already late and our boat is at 08:30 tomorrow but on our way back an indian man asked daniel for a lighter and then insisted that we both sit down with him for a smoke. He owns his own guesthouse and gave us his cards and was talking about the same stuff over again and referred to us as his brother and sister. I really just wanted to get to bed but he just kept on chatting to us. After around 20 mins sitting on the pavement with him (and taking a group photo) he finally let us go and we took his business cards with us as he had cheap rooms. We walked back to the hotel and packed before getting some much needed rest!
