We woke up and quickly gathered our belongings and walked down to the beach. There were a herd of buffalos sitting on the sand which made me wonder where they all go after? We didn't have time for breakfast and we noticed loads of other backpackers who were also waiting for the boat eating plain bageuttes. As it got closer to the departure time everyone grrabbed their backpacks and headed to the shore as three long boats pulled up. It seemed like there were too many people to fit in the boats and there were a group of boys who hadn't prebooked and just handed a man money for a ticket, nothing is organised properly in Laos!
Everyone began to kind of que with their tickets in hand to board the boats and honestly if they put one more person on each boat it would probably begin to sink. We all set off sail, and there were still some travellers left behind on the beach. We sailed back to the land we came from and got off to walk to the bus station. We grabbed a 10,000 baguette on the way and when we arrived there were masses waiting for the bus; including the weird laos man who would sit and chill with everyone. As Dan went to the visa man to get our forms the weird man attached himself to me hugging my arm and resting his head on my chest, which brought a smile to everyone's face.
We filled out our Laos departure cards and the visa for Cambodia and gave them to the organiser along with our passports. We were all given different colour tickets; ours were yellow which assigned us to the red coach. It was supposed to be a VIP bus but was far from. The air conditioning was none existent but the leg room was generous. We began the drive to the border where all the passengers had to get off and pass the check point. There was a woman with an electrical thermometer which she put close to everyones throat to make sure we weren't entering with any fevers. We were all told to sit in a small sheltered cafe to wait until we got our passports back. We were called back onto the bus but the man giving everyones passports back didn't have ours so Dan had to find the man who did and we finally got them back. We continued the rest of our journey in Cambodia. The scenery isn't as nice as Laos and everything seems to be flatter. We continued to drive for around 5 hours with only one stop so i was hot, grumpy and dying for a cigarette. We finally arrived in kraitie and when we got off the coach we were greeted by a friendly man advertising a hotel. They charged $8 a night which is very reasonable so we hopped on the back of his tuktuk and drove to the hotel. He was a very sweet man with a soft, high pitched voice and a smile that would melt chocolate; his name is Mr Sa. He showed us to our room which was great. Big, clean double bed, private clean bathroom and a window, a f***ing window! Woohoo! After standing under the fan for a good few minutes we both had a shower. I badly needed to withdraw money so i walked alone down the road to the ATM which was out of service; bummer. Dan met me half way and we walked to the small central bit with restaurants to find something to eat.
We found a place on the corner with a european man working there who greeted us with recommendations and menus, already the service in Cambodia s***s on the one in Laos. All the dishes had two prices, one in dollars and one in real. I ordered a vegetable curry and rice with lemon juice, Dan got a beer and beef stir fried with mushrooms. The food came out around five minutes of ordering and didn't taste bad at all although, i'm sure i got small bits of chicken in my veggie curry! They're lucky i'm not vegetarian. It was so hot and i was sweating while eating, that sticky kind of hot which meant i couldn't properly enjoy my meal, even though i didn't have much of an appetite anyway. The bill cost $6.75 altogether which is a bloody bargain. We left the restaurant and walked down in search of an ATM but we had no luck so just headed back to the hotel. We booked an excursion with Mr Sa for tomorrow to see the dolphins early morning and visit the rapids of the Mekong which you can only do in dry season. We also booked a bus ticket for the day after at 6:30am to the capital: Phnom Penh. We grabbed our ipads from the room to message home, i got bitten lots on my feet which is the worst place to get bitten! We then headed up to the room to smoke and sleep.
