Agnes Water/1770When we first arrived in Oz everyone told us to visit a little place on the coast called 1770, this is where Captain Cook arrived in the year 1770!Everyone has raved on about it so we decided to include it in our little adventure. It was 'one of those drives' that got us here, we left Rockhampton thinking that the drive would only be about 40km but 2 and a half hours later we were still driving, stupidly we hadn't filled the petrol tank and drove for about 20km with the petrol light on, finally finding petrol in a tiny little stop off!1770 wasn't what we had expected at all, yes it was lovely but it was sooooo tiny and really there wasn't much to do there. We were tired and sick of driving so we had decided to get there and down tools staying for a couple of days, we found a cheap campsite $4.50 each but with one major problem, the longdrop, yes as you can imagine I hate these things, you lift the lid and it's a long tunnel and you just have to sit on the normal toilet seat and go the loo, Aaron shined his torch down it by accident one night and saw all the cockroaches down there scuttling about…yuk! We cheekily avoided paying for 2 out of the 3 nights, and having too many of the outside 'in full view' of everyone showers! To be honest I hated the campsite, it was dusty and sandy and I refused to go the loo for the whole three days!We also noticed that if we sat outside there were, what we renamed 'spazmo bugs' these were huge and in the day just sat and reserved their energy on the wooden posts! We headed down to our little beach which was totally amazing, really secluded on the first day there was only us on there! So that was it really, not more to report on 1770… off to Budaberg!
Bundaberg
It was lovely when we arrived in Bundaberg, at the 'Tourist Information' we were told that we had arrived on the first night of the 'Turtles nesting season' now what are the chances of that eh, we quickly snapped up our tickets mighty chuffed with ourselves and had a mooch around town.On the way to the campsite the heavens opened, we drove 20km on the correct road in the wrong direction, so by the time we got to the site we were hungry tired and wet!
We had to set off at 7pm for the Turtles and quickly threw some noodles down our throats, drove the 5 minute walk to the platform and waited for 3 hours for a turtle to be spotted on the beach. What happens is there are patrollers on the beach who radio through to the platform and then you are taken down and watch the turtle come up the beach then make a nest and lay its 100 or so eggs! You can take piccys so long as you stay behind the turtle so's not to terrify her!Sadly though there were no turtles that night apart from a local fisherman bringing one in that had gotten trapped in the net, he called the center and we all went down to have a look at her.Turtles are born on a beach and the time it takes them to get into the water is important as they have an 'inbuilt' gps in their brain which keeps that exact location for when in 30 years time they are ready to mate and nest they go back there. They don't nest until 30 years old so they spend all that time floating about and trying to survive the seas!We got back to the campsite at about 11.30 and decided to have a hot shower and warm and dry up before bed!
