Salar De Uyuni Trip
Day One
Woke up and threw our money through the reception window for our hostel because no one was there! we quickly hurried along to get cash out because we needed Bolivians for the border... the cash machine was closed.
We were now stuck as San Pedro only has one ATM. What idiot travellers we were not being prepared the night before! We usually laugh at the travellers who do things like this! Luckily enough the guide said he was going to lend us the money :) .. When we got to the border, the guide didnt want to give us any money! Our spanish caused us troubles again! Thankfully, our friend Humphrey lent us some money :) Castastrophy over!
We went through immigration, which was a hut in the middle of the desert and then began our trip with 4 others in our jeep and our Spanish driver Alberto!
On the first day we saw lots of different lakes. They were all different colours and looked really nice. Some where brown/blue depending on the angle because of copper sulphate, and others were red, bright green or bright blue :) We were driving through the Andes and also Volcanoes, we were at a height of 4900m so Altitude sickness kicked in on the way up! Even though we did chew on some Coca leaves!!!
For the frist night we stayed in a hostel in the middle of nowhere! We went to the toxic red lakes where there were hundreds of flamingos. Mikaela found a flamingo egg :) which she originally thought was a llama egg because there were lots of llamas there too! We went to bed wrapped in our new sleeping bags and Alpaca blankets because it was FREEEZING!
Day Two
Today we saw strange rock formations and saw a few more lakes. We visited a steam train cemetry which was fun, we pretended to drive the trains and be the steam coming out of the chimneys :D
We arrived in Uyuni town quite late, it looked like an army barrack. It was carnival so all the locals were hammered! One old man dressed in a suit was passed out half on the floor and half on the wall! Another old man was serving in his convienience store giving us free beer and singing to Black Eyed Peas...he was about 70!
Day Three
Up for a 8.30am leave, ran to the cash point because we still had no money, there was a huge queue of travellers! No chance on getting money out again!! Plus, there is only one ATM in this town too!
We were heading to the salt flats today, the roads there were NOT roads!!! Therefore the trip there was fun in our jeep :) When we got there the view was incredible. There was a 20cm layer of water on top of the flats so everything was mirrored. Everything was reflected, which meant we could not see the horizon so it looked like the edge of the earth!! We took loads of photos and had lunch here.
This trip has had the best scenery so far. The Salt Flats were amazing. So far Bolivia's been great. Its nice and cheap here :)
Heading to the capital La Paz tomorrow. xxx
