Last Night Out in Cairns & Fitzroy Island
We trotted off to the lovely place that is 'The Woolshed', for our final $6 upgrade meal and pint of the finest ale.
We sat down, had a few laughs, ate the grub and the girls started on the bottles of beer that we'd smuggled in there bags (how cheap!). I headed back to meet the boys at the hostel to drink with the boys. After a good session at the hostel we hit the town and stopped off in PJ's before ending the night in Gilligans. We arrived back at the hostel at 4am, were Becki was munching through some crackers and cheese in the kitchen! She was a bit worse for wear but it seemed that she had had a good and interesting night!
Anyhow - 3hrs later, the alarm sounded and we all got up (with extremely sore heads) and quickly got ready to make our way to the ferry terminal where we would board the ferry to take us to Fitzroy Island.
Once on the boat, the girls and Thierry sat on the top deck in the morning sun and fresh air and I fell asleep down stairs on the floor.
We arrived on the island and were amazed by the beauty of it. Coral beaches lined the shores of the turqoise waters. It was stunning. After Thierry had grabbed a strong black coffee from the cafe, he was fully functioning again and so we all strolled along the 20 minute track to 'Nudey Beach' - and yes, it does say on the brochure, 'clothes are optional'! (We remained clad...to my disappointment). On the walk, we saw lots of ghekkos in the leaves on the ground - they were tiny ones with red stripes on their backs - lovely! When we got to the beach, it again, was stunning. The sand was white and in fact, was not sand at all. It was millions of bits of coral, steeping off down into the waters. Although quite uncomfortable to walk on, it was ok to lay on once we got settled.
The sarongs got thrown down and by 10am, we were all laying in a line on the beach relaxing and dozing in the morning sun. Kara and Becki went for a swim and after being in only a couple of ft of water, being caught by a mini-rip and thrown backwards with my legs up in the air and totally washed over.. (so they told me) they decided to get out!! A few hours later and after a lunch snack of tuna and crackers, we made our way back along the track to the restaurant where Thierry and Kara got some proper lunch. At 3pm, our ferry arrived to take us back to the mainland and we all fell asleep like tired little children on the journey home.
Once back in Cairns, a quiet night was in order. We packed our bags and cooked a dinner of veggies and tomato sauce (to use up our groceries!). The last night in Cairns and I was fairly glad to be moving on to be honest.
We were being picked up at 7.25 the next morning though...... We had a day of FUN ahead of use - yipeeeee
Bye for now
