Flight to Sydney was another really nice one, with good food and plenty of free red wine! Watched a couple of films and had a bit of sleep, but i think sleeper trains will never be outdone in the realms of transport!
Arrived at 7am, and got a free shuttle bus to the hostel. Simon and Steve who we went to uni with are already in australia so will be good to catch up with them. We were supposed to be staying in the same room as Steve but when we got there it stank of disguisting boys so we decided to stay in an all female dorm with a balcony! Most of the girls were in bed when we arrived so we dumped our stuff and went to find the lads!
Ste had managed to get us tickets for a boat trip that afternoon, so headed into Sydney and looked round the shops. I got stephen's bday card and also a new strapless bra as the underwire had come out of my old one! It is ridiculous how expensive everything is over here! a massive shock from Thailand where you can eat for a week on what you spend on one day's worth of food here! We also booked hair appointments for the monday as my hair is getting ridiculous and looks more like a birds nest than a haircut!
We met the lads and some other guys from the hostel at half 2 to board the boat. But it turned out it was a party boat and everyone onboard was dressed really nicely as if for a night out...my whole outfit had cost 12 pounds and gem was pretty similar so we looked slightly out of place, but it was a great afternoon. should have cost us 22 pounds so the fact it was free was great!
Gem's friend Jen moved to Sydney a couple of years ago and married an Aussie and they were in Sydney for the weekend so as soon as we got off the boat we went to meet them for tea. The boat docked at darling Harbour which is probably one of the nicest areas in Sydney so again we looked so out of place wearing shorts and vest tops. I had also not thought to bring my glasses so was sat in a bar at 10pm in perscription sunglasses!! Was a nice night though and just went straight to bed when we got back!
The next day we headed to Bondi beach for some much needed sunbathing. It was so nice to think we actually have nothing to do but sit in the sun for the next few days! That night we didnt really want to drink so we had a quick meal with the lads and headed to bed! Its so strange cooking again...well i use the term loosely as si is a bit of a nazi chef and wont let anyone else cook, but we bought bread and it went off after a few days and i was like "i cant belive its gone mouldy already" and then realised bread does go mouldy after a few days! I have eaten marmite on toast every morning much to the diguist of Ste who cant watch me eat it. I also bought myself a proper towel as the micro ones dont really do the job! and its nice to wrap up in a fluffy towel after a shower!
The hostel we are staying in is lovely, has a lot of bathrooms and big rooms so your not all cramped together. I thought i would find it hard to sleep in a dorm with 10 other people but actually it is totally fine, ive not really been woken up once!
Monday we went back to bondi, but left early for the hairdressers! We had both heard a few horror stories about cuts and colours in Oz and I was getting highlights and my hair is blonde at the end from my ponytail but then a dull blondy brown at the top! Anyway i made sure the girl did thin highlights and went right to my scalp so i didnt get roots! There was an older man there who i assume was the owner sticking his 2p worth in at any given moment and to my horror he came up behind me with some scissors and started cutting away! He looked about 60 and a member of the mafia and he hadnt even asked what i wanted doing. So i stopped him in his tracks and gave very specific instructions about what i wanted! In the end I really liked it and he was a dab hand with the thinning scissors so i was very happy. Gem didn't like hers at all, but she has straightened it a few times herself since then so i think its growing on her!
On Tuesday we went to Manly beach with Ste, Si and Matt (a french guy who the lads have made friends with!). Si was supposed to be working up until thursday when we leave for melbourne, but he never went in this week, so i hope he doesnt need a reference! Manly is really nice, and after sunbathing we went for a meal. One of the guys in the hostel was leaving on Wednesday and apparently tuesday is a big night in Kings Cross so we all got ready and went to a place called World Bar! Me and Gem dont have any heels or nice shoes with us, and i didnt think we'd need them until LA but apparently Sydney is quite strict and at one point we didnt think we'd be alright to get in with flip flops on! We have been fine so far though! Was a fantatstic night out, and met loads of people which was good. me and Gem are pretty much the only girls in our dorm at the mo so we have the room all to ourselves!
We are driving to Melbourne on Thursday as the boys are going to watch the Grand Prix. The Who are playing there too which i wanted to go and see but tickets are about 70 pounds so i cant really justify it. Anyway we were going to try and get a car relocation because they give you petrol and its about $1 a day (50p) but we haven't been able to find one so we have rented a people carrier as there is going to be 5 of us (me, gem, ste, si, matt) We also dont have anywhere to stay on Friday or Saturday night as everywhere is booked up because of the Grand Prix but Im sure it will be fine!
