Our second day in Martinique. It
was supposed to be our first day and it’s a Sunday. Everything is closed, everything! The six of us wandered into town in case a supermarket was open. It wasn’t, so we sat in the small square outside and used the free Wi-Fi that I’d used yesterday. It wasn’t as fast for some reason.
We then walked to the sea front and joined the queue for the €7 return trip to Les Trois-Ilets. An island (so we thought) about a half hour ride away. On arrival it was time for a beer and a quick bash at their much faster Wi-Fi. Then we just strolled around the small centre. Most places were open and it was much nicer than Fort de France. It’s also still part of the mainland, as it were, as both towns are situated on the large bay. I’m guessing it’s probably an hour’s drive between the two, past the airport. After a nice jamon et fromage baguette et une eau, we walked back for the ferry. By now it was really hot.
Back in Fort de France the others went back on board but Barbara and I wandered up to see if the cathedral was open. It wasn’t. Then we walked up to see the Schoelcher Library and Government House before going back on board. When we got back a very small ship called Wind Surf was moored by us. It looked like it had five masts for sails.
After dinner the four boys and Barbara sat on the Terrace Deck and killed my last bottle of Tannat. Norman brought a bottle of rose and Barb & Phil drank some of that, Phil after finishing his pisco sour. This took us past 21:30, so we didn’t do the Champion’s quiz, much to Yvonne’s chagrin, as she was sat in there guarding our table.
If we thought that a bottle of decent red would hone our quizzing skills, we were sadly mistaken. In the SQ we matched our worst ever score on this cruise of seven!
