This morning we went on a city tour of Leon. We started at a mural which depicted the history of Nicaragua and Leon. It was amazingly done by school age children.... I guess there are going to be a lot of future Picasso's coming out of Nicaragua if the walls anything to go by!!
We looked at a few of Leon's attractions, including Nicaragua's only wooden church and afterwards we went up to a fortress which gave us the most amazing views of the volcanos that surround Leon, and a birds eye view of Leon itself!! The fortress had been turned into a jail, which was scary to think how many people were actually crammed into these jails!!! It would make an intriguing episode of banged up abroad, that's for sure.
Afterwards, we made our way to the cathedral in the main square of Leon and looked around inside...but the brilliance of what was to follow was mind blowing. We climbed the stairs to the top of the cathedral, again we got an amazing birds eye view of the city of Leon, however the roof top being engulfed by storm clouds rolling in was just the icing on the cake.
We had a quick lunch, and then made our way back to the hotel to get ready for our afternoon tour. This was a rum tour. Now this actually sounds a lot better than what it was!! Really it was just a self promotion tour. We jumped on a large golf cart and were driven from shed to shed. We saw how the barrels were made and where they are stored, and tasted a couple of samples of rums - that's it. Nothing on how they actually make the rum. I have at least now found out that I don't really enjoy rum!!
Once the rum tour finished we headed back to the hotel where we met some of the other tour group members for dinner!! Yum yum!!!
