We had heard that the scenery in Montenegro was good, but we had no idea of how good it would be, it was amazing. Parts of it reminded us of Norway, while other parts reminded us of Mongolia, it was just breathtaking! After entering from Bosnia we found ourselves traveling a road that clung to the side of this massive gorge, while mountains towered above us the valley floor with its river was well below us, and the forest was like a jungle. The first part took us forever because we kept stopping for photos. We eventually left the gorge and had to make our way up and over a pass at just over 2000 meters where there was still snow by the road at places around 2.5 meters deep. We eventually made it to Zabljak where we found a village that was more like an alpine town than a southern Europe town. We had a great time riding with some Czech and Hungarian riders and spent some time talking to some French cyclists and German campers, it had been a really multi cultural time. After looking around Zabljak we headed for the coast and found ourselves at Budva. What a tourist trap we found ourselves in! The caravan park was rundown and over priced. The hotels have their sections of the beach closed off for their guests where they are treated to sand that has been smoothed out and board walks laid down so that they don't have to walk on the sand when they go to their sun lounge that is protected from the sun by an umbrella and should they venture into the water there is a life guard watching over them. Then their is the fake grass and palm trees to give it some greenery, it is absolutely disgusting and an insult to the senses. The beaches aren't any good anyway, the sand is coarse and yellow and as you get closer to the water it gives way to pebbles that give way to stones, give me a good "free"Aussie beach any day mate! We saw one hotel beach that advertised you were required to use their equipment at a cost of €75! Then we went to visit the old town that was built just off the mainland on an island, only to be stopped by security and told that it was for hotel guests only. He was telling me that the whole place was now a hotel and I needed to be a guest to see it. What a joke and what a disgrace! It might be good for the local employment and the local economy, but we think it is wrong to sell off the history and culture the way they have and we laugh at these people that use these private beaches if they think they are enjoying nature and the beach as it was intended. We saw a motorcade of black Audi's escorted by a black unmarked Police car arrive at one very exclusive looking hotel and then watched as overweight men were helped by their minders to tables overlooking the beach. God I'm glad I'm working class and healthy, not rich and overweight. Despite all this, we have enjoyed talking with the locals and we enjoyed a meal in a restaurant on the beach for Julie's birthday.

Janet McIntyre Glad that you found the scenery so wonderful and could take the time to let it literally stop you in your tracks. Budva sounds appalling and kind of sickening.
Mum/Marion A mixed bag. Great scenery then Budva, you certainly wouldnt want to spend time there. Loved the story of the Audi cars, etc. I say 'amen' to your last sentence Michael, my thoughts exactly.
