We had plans of heading to Zagreb, but the forecast was for rain, while the forecast for the coast was for less rain. So we checked the Internet to see if there was anything for us to see in Zagreb and then decided to head down the coast towards Zadar, but our research had shown there was a caravan park in Starigrad called "Camp Michael". How could we not stay there?! As we headed down the coast we were not too thrilled with what we could see, the mountains to our left were big, high and impressive, but all rock with little to no vegetation and to our right there were the islands with no vegetation. The road was nice and windy and well made and the water looked inviting, but the lack of vegetation and the villages reminded us of Spain. When we arrived at camp Michael we picked up information on Croatia and found we had missed some lakes in the north that looked good, but there was a National Park close to us now and we decided to have a look the next day. Paklenica National park turned out to be absolutely beautiful with high mountains of rock contrasted against a valley of trees with a very clean and clear stream flowing through it. The park is well known for its rock climbing and there were many people taking advantage of this and we spotted people well up the mountains. With what we had seen and the information we had we decided we should avoid the coast and head inland, so our next stop was Krka National Park to the south. Our route took us through areas that had been devastated by the war and we found it quite depressing to see abandoned farms, houses with bullet marks in them and houses burnt out, hard to believe the war finished in 1995 and it still looks like this. We weren't disappointed by Krka National Park. We payed to do a tour and we saw some amazing beauty in a park dominated by a large river with numerous water falls and aquatic life like we have never before seen. It was amazing and well worth seeing. From Krka we were heading south and into Bosnia, so while we didn't see as much of Croatia as we may have liked, what we saw of its natural environment we absolutely loved and while people might like the Dalmatian Coast, we would recommend having a look further inland.
