MeznG. In the air, on the road, river or sea again
Sailing in Greenock Harbour its raining and grey and gloomy kind of what I had expected of Scotland. We have booked a tour which will take us into the city of Glasgow and to Kelvingrove Museum and Gallery. The drive is not particularly picturesque and the rain and our guide is not helping. I ave no doubt that she knows her stuff but being able to share it in an interesting and engaging way is proving challenging. We are nearer to the back of the bus today and its not easy to hear and the people at the front of the bus tend to engage the guide in conversation which we can't hear so we are past things before she points them out! We have a drive around Glasgow and I know the weather is not helping but it appears a very drab city. Oh of course the other thing is that its Sunday so the shops that will open will not do so until after noon. The streets are very quiet, not much traffic at all except around the cathedral area. At the gallery we thankfully have the chance to wander about on our own. There are some interesting collections of original paintings by Monet, Van Gogh and Rembrandt as well as Salvatore Dali's St John of the Cross. My favourite though was Sir Roger the elephant. He is a stuffed elephant that has been in the museum for over a 100 years. We return to the ship and walk back into town. The weather has cleared so walking around the port town of Greenock is quite pleasant. We find a pub to have a drink before returning to the ship. Our departure is delayed by over 30 minutes while we wait for a group of 8 that were late returning from their tour. The funniest thing about this was that the good people of Scotland had assembled on the dock to fare well us with flag waving , pipe band a poor person dressed in a blowup costume of a Scotsman in a kilt doing a jig. This troupe was unaware of our delayed passengers so instead of a 10 minute sail away performance they had to keep waving, playing and dancing for over 30 minutes....they could hardly give up and walk away. Felt sorry for the poor person in the suit as it was quite warm and he was trapped in a blow up suit. The delayed passengers stepped out of their chauffeur driven vehicle hauling their numerous bags of shopping to a rousing welcome from the passengers on board. Now that was a walk/dash of shame and they had to go the full length of the ship to get to the gangway!!!!
