MeznG. In the air, on the road, river or sea again
Today is the day. We are scheduled to be picked up at 8am for our transport to the RV. We grab a coffee and sort of Brekkie and wait. The drive is around 90 minutes and seamless. On the other-hand, the traffic into the city is bumper to bumper as there had been an accident earlier in the morning. On the drive we start to plan. We need a : Room mate agreement Bathroom roster A/C temperature agreement A no hanky panky pact We are yet to see it but we are thinking we will call our RV ..... Harvey the RV. This is what happens when we have too much time on our hands! We rented and paid for this vehicle 6 months ago and yet we still have to wait over an hour for it to be ready for us.... Go figure! Actually make that more than 4 hours! It's after 1.30 before we take possession of Harvey the RV but straight away we are in love with him. He is actually an upgrade on what we were expecting. He has sides that slide out but Glenn doesn't have his chair so he has taken the co pilot seat for the beginning of the trip. Finally we are on the road and its very exciting. First priority is to get some food. We were not expecting to be so long so we hadn't had a good breakfast. We pick up the basic essentials for now and we enjoy our first meal in the carpark of the shopping centre! On the road and we are headed for Joliet. Some of the driving is on the highway but then we get onto the old road. It's suburbia / country . A lot of corn and soy bean crops. We settle into our positions very easily, Milton driving, Glenn on the assist, Liz laying on the couch and I am in the office sourcing our nearest supermarket and accommodation. Joliet area historical museum and Route 66 welcome centre is our first official stop. We were greeted at the door by very enthusiastic couple of volunteers Kathy and Bud. We arrived just before 4 and they shut at 5 so Bud cut us a deal and charged us half price $3 each. It is a well set out display of the history of Joliet and a fantastic display of Route66 memorabilia. Our ever so helpful and keen hosts told us of the must see places and how much time we need.... She was only talking about Illinois not including the other states. We are going to need to rationalise. After a quick stock up of food and essentials at Walmart, we arrive at our first RV park. Our site is a pull through (no backing required) and we have power, water and sewerage so we don't need to use our own. The park is on a lake but next to the highway. Could be noisy but nothing I think that will bother us. Goodnight Harvey
