MeznG. In the air, on the road, river or sea again
Our morning routine will need to be refined. We should probably aim to be on the road a bit before 10.30 if we are going to get to Las Vegas in time! The aim is to get to Springfield today. First stop will be the Launching Pad Drive in diner and the Gemini Giant in Wilmington. We have a photo stop and put the coffee on. We drive past the Polka Dot diner and onto Gardner to stop at the 2 cell gaol built to house the hobos and vagrants at night so the towns people felt safe. Alongside the gaol is a wagon that was formerly used as a diner to feed the travellers. We stop at Dwight a very small town with a historic Texaco Gas Station. It's a little museum come shop. On now to Pontiac. So much to see but first we must eat. We stop at the Old log cabin diner. Originally opened in 1926 facing the highway but when the highway was realigned it was behind the diner, so they picked the diner and turned it around! Great story, good food and very friendly people. Lunch for 4 including beers $35! In the town of Pontiac there the Route 66 Hall of Fame and Museum, the Pontiac Museum (the cars) and an amazing display of wall murals. Some of the murals are so realistic you just think you can walk up and open the doors and walk in. On most street corners are miniature cars painted in bright colours, a local bloke said they were part of an art exhibit once but they proved to be so popular with the visitors that they decided to keep them. Time to hit the road again if we are going to get to Springfield at a reasonable time. On the way we stop at Atlanta to see the Bunyan Giant a close relative if the Gemini Giant and across the street is a real old fashion cafe. It's like being in a time warp. Next stop is Lincoln and the giant covered wagon. Full steam ahead now to our camp ground outside of Springfield via Walmart to pick up more supplies. We are Walmart fans, we are eating extremely well for very little cost. Self catering is the way to go. Finally we reach our camp ground in the middle of nowhere. Springfield KOA Rochester. It's very quiet and clean. Funny how we have a toilet and shower in our house however we still trek to the ablutions block before bed. Tonight we all went together and upon return to Harvey we discovered he had put himself to bed and locked is out! After a moment of panic we remember that the windows were open and the screens can also open. Milton hoists Liz head first through the window while Glenn and I roll around laughing. Of all the times not to have a phone or a camera! That was a first and I'll bet it doesn't happen again! A busy but very satisfying day. Good night Harvey! Xx
