Hello everbody, one week in now and (much to my surprise and despite the best efforts of the bus drivers) we're still alive! Have enjoyed our time in Fort Cochin; Kerela and the Deep South are very beautiful. Just got back from a 24 hour cruise on the backwaters which was wonderful. Had our own houseboat with three servants who kept bringing us amazing Indian food whilst we sat on the cushions at the front of the boat and marvelled at the lush scenery. Sat out till late just soaking up the peace and beauty of our surroundings and listening to nature sounds in the darkness. We also had to navigate the buses to get to and from Alleppey (where our boat was), and managed quite impressively I feel! These are invariably packed and drive down the middle of the road straight towards other vehicles. Some of the overtaking was completely insane but I am getting used to the sense of impending death that comes with road travel now.
One of our favourite features of Fort Cochin is the Chinese Fishing nets; enormous, yet graceful and majestic fishing contraptions that sit on the edge of the harbour. Watching the fishermen work them is incredibly captivating. We often climb out onto them during late afternoon and dangle our feet over the water. The other day a pod of dolphins came right in to play which was amazing!
Think we will head down to Varkala tomorrow which means more train travel. Really loved our trip down from Mumbai. Watching India roll by is incredible. An experience not to be missed. Even got a fairly good nights sleep on the top bunk!
Hope you are all well, will keep you updated.
