For anybody out there who thought I was nothing more than brains and beauty I am now officially adding certified adventurer to the list.
I spent 3 days trekking in the world's oldest rainforest, Taman Negera, in Malaysia. It was the most adventorus, terrifying, dirtiest, bloodiest, most unique experience in my life!!! We had to carry 3 litre bottles of water, a sleeping bag, a sleeping mat, a plastic plate, glass and a spoon along with our clothes etc in ourm backpacks, so you can imagine the weight of our backpacks, and all this we had to carry on our poor backs the whole time whilst trekking! We walked 5hours the first day to a cave in which we spent the night and 4 hours the next day to a aborigine village where we spent the night and we did a canapy walk the final day! Our guide was the cheekiest guy ever. He used the term 'jungle' as a prefix to everything, spent most days trying to scare us, and was worrying obsessed with magic mushrooms. My initial thoughts....within an hour I was drenched...dripping with sweat. My clothes were soaked through, and that's how they stayed for the next 2 days. I've never been so muddy, sweaty and smelly in my life. On top of all that, I was wearing the worlds slipperiest trainers, really not a good, since it was very muddy as it had rained the previous few nights. So the first time I slipped and fell it was embarassing, but after that it was just funny. The guide decided to cut me off a branch of a tree for me to use as a stick before I caused myself any 'serious injuries'. It really helped, my 'magic stick' I didnt trip up too much after that!! Secondly...who invented leeches? I hate these creatures!!!! We were warned about them and told to spray a lot of repellent on our feet but I had no idea that there would be soo many. They bite through your socks and trousers and just literally suck on your blood until theyve had enough and then fall off. Ugggghhh. We would stop every so often for water breaks and 'leech checks' and pull the b*****s off but sometimes it was too late...I was bitten 3 times on my left foot and then later one of the guys saw that my left thigh was also bleeding and my combats were just red!! Apart from the leeches we saw many creatures in the jungle, giant ants, woodpeckers and monkeys...unfourtunately no tigers or elephants, although we thought we heard something like an elephant!
So end of day one and we get to our beds for the night...ooh a big cave full of bats, literally just what I always wanted! The cave was huge, when I woke up in the morning I was actually quite surprised that I'd lived through the night. Our guide had told the guys to get some firewood and they'd returned with an entire tree...one that was still alive and wasn't all that big on burning. In the meantime us girls had to cut the vegetables for dinner...with a spoon. As we all lay there uncomfortably huddled together, listening to the sound of the jungle spirit, our guide struggled to light the fire and then informed us that with smoke from the fire we'd be 70% safe from wild animals. Great odds. We all slept in the pitch black for about 2 hours. There were so many mysterious noises in that cave I was literally s***ting myself. My heart was pounding as I thought of all the spiders and scorpions that were probably crawling right next to me. I've never wanted the sun to rise so much.
The second night we slept in a shack in a tribal village. These people only started wearing clothes 50 years ago and they're still totally living the jungle life. They showed us how to make fire and kill animals using blowdarts, which they still use to hunt for gibbons, its amazing!
