This weekend we went to cape coast. In true African style it was rushed, late and unorganised but it was completely worth it.
On the friday we went to visit the slave castle after 6 hours drive. It was built by the British and used as a holding bay for slaves. I felt ashamed to be British. I've never felt that before. To know British people held 2000 slaves there ready for 'exporting'. For 3 months 800 people would be kept in a tiny dungeon. There was no light. They had nowhere to use the toilet. If they were still alive after 3 months they would be sent to work. The women were kept and raped. They even had children there. It seems so unreal. How can the British do that, let alone invent it? Times have changed so much and I have to say I am thankful I am alive in these days and not back then.
After cape coast we went to a few shops and i brought some pretty cool souvenirs. Then we went to the hotel. Me, Rhiannon and Hassell are in the same room backing onto somebody's living room. Haha. We went to eat and waited 2 hours for a sandwich. Im starting to get used to the complete lack of any time concept. Afterwards we went to a beach bar. We had a drink, went on the beach and it was really nice. Walking back was a little scary. I get the feeling cape coast isn't the safest of places.
I didn't sleep very well last night. Outside was real noisy. Breakfast didn't quite take 3 hours as we ordered the night before. We then went to the canopy. This is a rainforest where there are 7 high suspended walkway canopies. It was wet, slippery and rocky but it was good. Anyway adrenalin is good for the metabolism. Haha. Im a wimp for heights but it was fun.
Afterwards we went to the crocodile pond. The crocodiles have lived in harmony with humans here for hundreds of years. I got to straddle a crocodile. I was praying for my life the entire time. The woman running it was lovely.
After we made our way back to ho, stopping in accra to take some people back to the airport.
When we got back we were taken to a nightclub. The group who opted out of tours were already there. We danced a lot. African danced. It was fun and how can you say no when a double gin is 27p equivalent at home. I didn't drink though as i still feel pretty responsible for this group.
