I'm surprised I stayed awake today. I'm incredibly thankful though, as any sleepiness may have led to me plunging to my death from Angel's Landing in Zion National Park.
I wasn't exactly the most sociable soul on the way to Zion from Vegas. I basically threw my stuff onto the bus and went straight to the back to sleep. We stopped quite a bit so I only managed about 20 minutes before we got to Zion. I was starving as I'd had breakfast really early, so I grabbed something and headed out for the Angel's Landing walk. This is a trail that leads to the very top of one of the tallest sandstone stacks via a thin walkway that allows access with steep drops on both sides. It's really not recommended for anyone with a fear of heights!
Two English girls, Linda and Nicola, joined me after I persuaded them to do the toughest climb in the park. The views got better and better and we bumped into Davide, Michael and Karim at the top. All three had been on the Yosemite trip last week, as were our drivers Brian and Charlie. The views from Angel's Landing were spectacular and the sheer drop from the stack is just crazy. We left just as it started to spot with rain, then realised that we'd changed timezones and we were already late for getting back to our campsite. Oops.
We had the usual fire and food - which was ready the instant we arrived - in the evening and we set up to sleep under the stars. My one season sleeping bag really isn't cut out for the temperature that we experienced, so the extra million layers I wore were welcome!
