Everyone who slept on the tarp under the skies last night just disappeared in a massive exodus to the bus in the middle of the night. Why? It was raining. I was quite warm and sleepy so when I realised it had stopped as quickly as it started, I just went back to sleep. This was after I had to readjust the rocks holding the tarp down. It was pretty windy too.
Eventually even I was defeated and I moved in under the covered picnic area when it started pouring steadily. It helped a bit but the wind still pushed the rain towards me. I crossed my fingers, slept, and awoke semi dry. Winner!
I was so cold that I busied myself doing pretty much everything for breakfast and to clear up ready to leave in the morning. Charlie called me "the most useful person with a hangover he'd seen"! We were treated to a quick outlook over Canyonlands National Park as we were early getting away. We then went off to a lake to jump in and generally freeze. I took the chance to wash before I risked hypothermia. To say the water was not warm would be an understatement.
Our campsite for the night was the awe-inspiring Goosenecks. These are huge (I mean massive) meanders cut 500 feet into the rock by the Colorado River and it is simply stunning.
Helen lit us a fire using magnesium, flint and a knife (Bear Grylls eat your heart out) and we had some more guitar and merriment. I was even able to play guitar myself and sound somewhat coherent. Life was good!
Apparently it gets even windier here than last night, and that was bad enough! So am I going to risk sleeping outside under the stars? Of course! Holly is going to join me too, so at least we have some body warmth if things get really cold. Holly is the lovely girl who works at the Green Tortoise offices, as I've not introduced her and she's bound to complain about that.
