Up early after a cold night, the grass is white with frost as are the tents.
Today we're going to see steam trains on the West Somerset Railway. http://westsomersetrailway.vticket.co.uk/
With D&J we wait outside the site for the 398 bus which arrives at 9:39 to take us via Winsford, Exford and Dunster arriving at Minehead station at 10:45. We buy our train tickets and go for an early lunch in the Turntable Restaurant.
Our train is hauled by GWR 7828 Odney Manor and we are joined in the carriage by a lovely elderly lady who used to visit Falmouth regularly, and is a font of knowledge about the railway and surrounding area.
The scenery is beautiful fresh spring growth, a few early bluebells, rape seed flowers and more pheasant. At Washford we spot what used to be Lily Langtry House where we stayed a few times years ago. Across the water we see Hinkley Point power station glowing white in the sunshine, its presence reminding us that the lovely landscape has not been ruined by wind turbines. Not one.
Steam hangs over the fields as we return from Bishops Lydeard with the loco working hard. Along the way we are passed by Raveningham Hall and a diesel railcar.
Back at Minehead it is cold and we have nearly an hour and a half to wait for the bus. Time for a hot drink and a cake in the Turntable followed by a chilly walk along the seafront (although the sea has disappeared from view to be replaced by a sea of sand and mud).
We get frozen waiting for the bus but soon warm up once aboard and when we reach Exford, away from the coast, people are sitting drinking outside the Crown Hotel.
The bus stops by the campsite at 18:40 and we head straight to the Badger's Holt for dinner. Inside is a log fire, good beer and good food. The food is served so quickly we don't have time to complete the quiz papers on the table. We chat again to the retriever couple and some other campers with a huge dog called Hex.
After dinner D&J come back to Mary*Lou for a nightcap before we turn in at 10:15 after a very enjoyable but tiring day.
