As for the rest of our trip we have been amazed by the wildlife and the hospitality here. From Madikwe Game Reserve we travelled on to Pilanesburg (North of that Michael Jackson owned Sun City I spoke about in an earlier blog entry). Here we drove on our own toview wildlife and stayed in a tented camp at Bakgatla Gate. Saw lots of white rihino, giraffe, and water bucks as well as impala,m wildabeest etc. Very few elephants nere and no cape buffalo to be seen. It was so odd to drive along in our little Budget rent a car with rhino gazing 20 feet away. Totally new and wonderful experience. But I must say nothing will match the elephants wandering around our vehicle in Madikwe.
The complex we stayed in was huge. Mostly catering to campers we stayed in one of five tented camps. Hot as blazes during the day and cold at night. This is where the beautiful baths part comes in. The South Africans like their baths. Four out of five of the places we've stayed have deep baths made for two. Very nice! The only exception was last night where we stayed in the most excentric B&B I've ever seen! Totally off the wall the Berlyn Peacock B&B (near Graskop) was absolutely faux French Provincial. Complete with peacocks, gardens, fountains, pillars, paintings (walls & framed) and copious copies of Michaelangelo's "David"!! We were overcome with kitsch!
Tonight we are at the Rissington Inn in Hazyview. A peaceful haven (with a great bath) near Kruger Park.
We have been north ot the Blyde River Canyon.... seen the sights not obscured by fog (yes fog & rain, not sun!) and had a most enjoyable few days.
Nice to be on our own where we can cut back on our food intake. The Africaans really know how to pack on the pounds.
This area is heavily forested in Radiata Pine & Eucalyptus. Despite an awful fire last year it still retains it's beauty. VEry rugged rocky ground with beautiful canyon views.
Tomorrow we head off through Kruger Park to the Crocodile Gate. Wonder what we'll see there?
