This morning it is foggy, windy and kind of rainy. Not rain really.... more like a dense fog?! All I know is that this day is nothing like yesterday.But this is all part of the experience and all of us are pretty upbeat.... Especially when the fire is going and coffee is on. I have to tell you that, having reached our advanced age, it is really good to stay in bed and listen to the 'kids' stoking the fire and making coffee. What a blessing .... there ...

It feels so good to be here on the island just relaxing in the sun. For me the hardest part about kayaking is the preparation. Even with my lists written and items crossed off, I still worry that I have forgotten something.Once you take off in your kayak you are finally 'away'. What you have forgotten is forgotten.... and most of the time it is not needed. As long as you have food, survival supplies, shelter and medicine you can survive almost anything...

When the 'kids' get older you just don't have the opportunities to travel together. In fact the last time we camped with our kids I think they both complained so much we decided never again. That was over 15 years ago. So...armed with memories of wind storms, flattened tents, blisters, questionable food and wild animals..... here we are about to set off on our first (extended) family adventure. Woke up to another beautiful day. We were packed up and on the road by 9AM. Today we drive across Vancouver Island to Tofino where we pick up two rental kayaks and head out to Vargas Island. On our way across the island we stopped to admire and take pictures of some huge trees. Incredible to think this is a second growth forest. As the road wound around and down to the west side of the island the weather seemed to close in a bit. Still sunny it was apparen...

Normally when we return to Canada from a trip overseas we arrive via the Vancouver International Airport. It's just a little bit different to arrive in Victoria via an American Cruise Ship. The ship eases in to it's berth just a few blocks from the Parliament Buildings. As you exit the ship there are flower baskets on old fashioned light standards and a couple welcoming you in costumes reminiscent of the 1800s.... translate that as a guy in a red coat ...
