After cramming everything we had with us in our carry-on bags we made our way to the Geneva airport to board EasyJet plane to Split, Croatia. After stuffing the bags in the overhead bin and our bodies in to row 26, we settled down to enjoy the sights we couldn't see from the last row. Note to all you travellers... it might be worth the extra money to select your seats.
We arrived to blue skies with stormy patches which, set against the craggy cliffs and blue waters, made a most welcoming site.
The shuttle bus dropped us off across from the ferry terminal which was close to the old city and our final destination but still meant a walk past crammed kiosks and people with rooms to rent. Seems a lot of the locals rent rooms to tourists. The people who let the rooms we are in have three in a small apartment. The rate is good and is less than a block from the old city.
After settling in we set off to explore. This is the off season yet there seem to be your groups everywhere. We were sure the cruise ships were in but there were none in sight!
The old city is a labyrinth of narrow passages, travertine cobblestones and lush bougainvillea. Known locally as Diocletian's Palace, this walled
City bustling with restaurants and bars was built around 300AD. Apparently the emperor was so afraid of being murdered (only fair as he was known for offing Christians) that he changed bedrooms often. He also had a circular space built with amazing acoustics so any intruders would be sure to be heard. What a way to go through life! We listened to an amazing Dalmation accapella group sing there...astounding!
We ate a traditional meal which was way too heavy for us (they're big on potatoes here). As the sun set we wandered along the pier before making our way along the promenade and back for a rest.
Next day we made our way up to the top of Park Suma Marjan which meant over a thousand steps up to a stunning viewpoint before wandering back along the waterfront. Probably. 25 Kms before lunch.
Ate a delicious lunch at the Fifa Buffet then wandered through the old city to a well deserved rest.
Split is definitely a tourist destination yet it still retains some old country charm. I'm looking forward to visiting the smaller coastal towns next week.
Stan & Doreen arrived in the early evening. Together we enjoyed the warm evening breezes, listened to music, got lost in the old city and just enjoyed each other's company.
Spent a lazy day together which included a climb up to the Cathedral bell tower (more amazing views), a walk to the beach & a shopping trip through the many kiosks.
Tonight Linda & Deloy arrive and the six of us begin yet another adventure. Tomorrow morning we are going to Bosnia. Tonight we will eat good food, drink a cold beer or two and enjoy!
