We have made our way to the Dinosaur Triangle, Hughenden, Richmond and Winton. This journey took us Sth of Paronella Park to Ingham, the westward up and over the Great Dividing range. The boys got to see Wallaman Falls, the longest single drop in Australia, which was very impressive. They also got to see a Cassowary in the wilds, they were quite impressed with their size, nearly as tall as Spencer. We stayed at Mt Fox while exploring the Falls.
On towards Hughenden, the start of the Dinosaur trail, we had a look at the Discovery centre here. Then it was on to Richmond, where the have a fabulous museum, Kronosaurus Korner, marine fossil packed. It is a brilliant tour with audio information that lets you step back in time.
We took the road on to Winton, which ended up being a long hot drive ( 41 deg)through the plains. We found the North Gregory hotel, where the first public performance of Waltzing Matilda, was held. We ended up camping out the back of the pub for 3 nights. They have 1 shower and no cold water, just hot bore water....... No relief.
At nights the hotel runs chicken races to raise money for charity, Spencer ended up helping him out with the proceedings.
Next day off to the Aust. Age of the Dinosaurs Museum, a museum perched on top of a giant Mesa, huge cliffs and gorges with views out over the plains.
The building itself was stunning, we took a tour of the laboratory, it has the worlds largest collection of Aust. Dinosaur fossils.
We had a lay day, Sunday, which was spent wandering around town, and going to the Quantilda exhibition. A historical look at the Country town.
Next day it was a pack up and off 120 kms out of town , to the Dinosaur Stampede at Lark Quarry Conservation park. We ended up doing the first tour of the day with just 2 others. The facility is another credit to the region, fabulous, very well done. It is in such a stunning part of the country, miles from anywhere it seems. The Tour was very informative, you cannot believe that you are standing where these animals have been, 3,300 footprints of the Dinosaurs. The footprints tell the tale of their moment in time 95 million years ago. Also very interesting to hear about some of the things that have gone wrong at this site.......... Collapsing walls, that could have been a whole lot worse...... People putting plaster of Paris in footprints only to realise they couldn't get it out, still visible....... A few more crazy things that people have done!
We left here and we were not sure of the exact route we were going to take.
Ended up driving through some incredible country that really is so green at the moment, due to recent rains. The road ended up just being tracks through paddocks, with a little bit of waiting for cattle to move, with Comet telling them what he thinks in the back.
Last night set up was with a lot of manure that is stuck to all parts of the camper....... We had more flies than usual in Longreach.
