So the drive out to the coast, Hervey Bay was stunning. We took the scenic drive north of Carnarvon gorge called "the wildlife way" ....picturesque. We stayed at the back of a roadhouse of sorts at Bauhinia Downs, great shower though. Headed on an ended staying the next night in a disused railway yard, $5 a night not too shabby, and we were the only ones there. Next morning off to wards Hervey Bay to get sorted for our trip to Fraser. We stayed a little out of town at a place called "good enough 4 the bush" a great little farm run by Naomi and Tony (great couple, hard working) they have a little of everything and open up their backyard to a few travellers like us. Tony is preparing his heart shaped dam and working like a Trojan. We got our supplies and got organised for an early leave, to drop Comet at the "resort"........ So sad, he knows !!!! Then it's off to the Ferry at River heads.
We were the first there, we then realised you have to back on ..... So Jonah was first with all eyes on him........ Pressure !
We had taken some air out of the tyres, so at the other end (30 mins later) we were off and making our way to Eurong and then taking the Eastern Beach all the way to our camping destination Dundaburah (you have to book these days, another thing that has changed) it took about an hour to frive the beach. After we set up we saw that friends we have met on the trip were camped 1 site away, a couple from Freo and their 2 boys, Drinks......
We organised to meet up with them at Champagne pools the next day, lovely place for a cool off. They had been told by a Ranger about Wayun creek, so we headed there for lunch and a swim and snorkell. It is crystal clear freshwater that is breast height with reeds on the walls, lots of fish and fast flowing. The friends were going off to Central station that arvo, so we made plans to meet up on Wednesday at Lake Mckenzie.
Next day we took off for a walk up the Sandblow at the back of Dundabura, it was like the Frech Foreign Legion..... Jonah was reminded of an episode of the Thunderbirds...... Hot, hot, hot. Melbourne Cup was listened to on the radio, and Jonah caught 2 Dart.
Next day the plan was to get to Lake Mckenzie, that meant leaving early, due to tides. We reached Eli creek and Jonah said " I'm not going to try it"
Then 3 other cars pulled up and I of them said" I got through yesterday at about the same height" safety in numbers he said..... And the boys pulled up over the other side and waited for us. We had a wave come over the bonnet, but it was all good. We got to thank the boys for waiting, they turned up at the lake as well. They were a couple of plumbers from Brisbane, one who was actually working over in Nauru, nice blokes.
No sign of the others though, so we left a note at their camp and headed home.
Next day lake Wobby, we had to leave early again for the tides..... We drove as far as we could and then it is a walk to the lookout and then a km walk down to the lake. Nice vertical sanddune straight into the water. After a safety briefing....... Roll side wards if you getting out of control, he was off and he was up to 10 plods back up the dune. Next, he dug his foot into the sand before entering the water and was not a happy camper. He stayed in the water for a bit, I flew down to investigate. Thought I had a bandage in my bag , so tried to run up the dune, I don't know how he did it 10 times. Back down again to try and get him up. Took a bit of crabbing and holding on to his foot to get him up...... But there was a long way to the car. Jonah, mammoth effort piggybacked him part of the way..... He used the railing and a stick, I think the initial shock had worn off, and we made it .
It isn't broken, but he is still hobbling around a bit. Back to the camper for some feet up.
Next day we went off to Eli creek, at least we could just float in the beautiful surrounds, stunning. The afternoon was for starting to pack up, for a 6 am take off down the beach, to get there in time for the ferry.
Managed to get on the ferry earlier so we didn't have to wait around, then it was off to collect a very relieved Comet.
